Tension as Suspected Terrorists Torch Police Station in Ondo Community

Residents of Ipele, a historic town located in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, were thrown into deep fear and uncertainty following a late-night attack allegedly carried out by suspected terrorists. The attackers reportedly set fire to the Divisional Police Station in the area, sparking widespread panic across the community.

According to information gathered from unverified local sources, the violent assault did not end with the destruction of the police facility alone. It was further alleged that a church within the community was also targeted during the operation, although details surrounding the extent of damage remain unclear.

A resident who spoke to Vanguard described the atmosphere in Ipele as chaotic and distressing. He explained that the incident caused residents to abandon their homes in fear, with many fleeing to nearby towns and villages in search of safety.

The source revealed that the attackers, believed to be about twenty in number, arrived in the community at approximately 10:00 pm. They reportedly began firing shots indiscriminately, creating confusion and forcing people to run for their lives.

According to the eyewitness, the armed group appeared to have a clear objective. After storming the town in what was described as a commando-style operation, they reportedly headed straight for the police divisional headquarters. The station was eventually set ablaze, leaving significant destruction in its wake.

“They operated freely for hours before leaving the area,” the source stated. He added that although security operatives later responded to the incident, the intensity and coordination of the attack made it difficult for them to regain control immediately.

Another resident who also spoke on the development confirmed that the situation was extremely serious. He insisted that the incident bore the characteristics of a terror-related attack, noting that the sustained gunfire and level of fear forced many residents into nearby bushes for safety.

“The sounds were frightening. None of us could stay back because it was too dangerous,” he said.

As of the time of reporting, the reason behind the attack remains unknown. However, the aftermath has left the community largely deserted, as many residents are yet to return due to safety concerns. Authorities are expected to investigate the incident and restore calm to the affected area.
