A tragic incident occurred in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, where a 17-year-old boy, Emeka Odogwu, was allegedly shot dead by a police officer. The incident, which unfolded on Saturday night, has sparked outrage and calls for justice.

What Happened?

According to reports, the altercation began when policemen stormed the area and found fireworks (commonly referred to as knockouts) in the possession of the victim. Attempts to arrest the boy reportedly met resistance, and as he tried to flee, a police officer opened fire, fatally wounding him.

Public Outcry and Condemnation

The incident has drawn condemnation from the Initiative for Social Rights Concerns and Advancement, a human rights organization. Its National Coordinator, Derrick Agberen, described the shooting as unprofessional and unacceptable.

In a public statement, Agberen called on the Delta State Police Command to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the officer responsible is held accountable.

“I sympathize with the family of the young boy who was allegedly shot by a police officer in Ozoro. While it was alleged that the boy resisted arrest and attempted to run, such a response from the police is completely unacceptable. We strongly condemn this unprofessional conduct,” Agberen said.

He also urged Nigerians to remain calm and civil when engaging with armed security personnel to prevent further escalations.

Police Response

The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, confirmed the incident, stating that the officer involved has been identified and is currently in detention.

The Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, has intervened, assuring the public and the victim’s family that justice will be served. “The CP has assured the family of justice,” Edafe affirmed.

Call for Accountability

This incident has reignited debates about police brutality and the urgent need for reforms within Nigeria’s security forces. As investigations unfold, the public is demanding not only justice for Emeka Odogwu but also greater accountability from law enforcement officers across the country.
