TCI Urges Akwa Ibom Government to Sustain Family Planning Programs for Urban Families

The Challenged Initiative (TCI), a reputable non-profit organization known for its strong advocacy in family planning and Adolescent and Youth Sexual and Reproductive Health (AYSRH) interventions for urban and low-income communities, has called on the Akwa Ibom State Government to prioritize and sustain ongoing family planning initiatives across the state.

According to the organization, maintaining access to affordable and sustainable family planning services is essential for improving public health outcomes, reducing poverty, and enhancing the well-being of families within Akwa Ibom. The TCI team emphasized that the success of these programs depends on the collaboration between the state government, healthcare providers, and local stakeholders to ensure continuous awareness and accessibility for families—especially those in rural and underserved communities.

During a recent stakeholder engagement in Uyo, representatives of TCI highlighted that family planning remains a vital tool in achieving population stability and economic development. They stressed that without sustainable funding and strong policy backing, many of the gains already recorded in the sector could be lost.

The organization also urged local health authorities and community leaders to work together to address barriers preventing women and young people from accessing reproductive health information and services. These barriers include cultural myths, lack of education, limited access to modern contraceptives, and inadequate awareness campaigns.

In its mission to improve Adolescent and Youth Sexual and Reproductive Health (AYSRH) outcomes, TCI reaffirmed its commitment to support Akwa Ibom through technical assistance, health education, and program sustainability. The group believes that continuous investment in reproductive health will not only improve maternal health but also empower families to make informed decisions about their reproductive choices.

TCI’s initiative aligns with global development goals championed by international bodies such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNFPA, which advocate for universal access to reproductive health services as part of sustainable development efforts.

Stakeholders present at the event applauded the TCI for its ongoing support and urged the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Health to integrate family planning into broader public health frameworks to ensure long-term sustainability.
