The political atmosphere in Kano State has grown increasingly tense as the All Progressives Congress (APC) issues a stern warning to the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)-led government over recent controversial statements made by Deputy Governor Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam. Allegations Against Professor Hafsat Ganduje Spark Controversy In a viral video widely circulated by DAILY POST, Abdulsalam accused Professor Hafsat Abdullahi Ganduje, wife of the former governor and current APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, of financial misconduct. He alleged that during her husband’s tenure, Professor Hafsat played a role in diverting pension funds, ensuring that payments to pensioners were made only after she had taken her share. APC Condemns Allegations, Calls for Action Reacting to these accusations, APC’s Kano Publicity Secretary, Ahmad S. Aruwa, strongly criticized the deputy governor’s remarks during an interview with Express Radio Kano. He labeled the statements as defamatory, unconstitutional, and a direct attack on the integrity of Professor Hafsat Ganduje. Aruwa emphasized that the allegations constituted character assassination and warned that such reckless statements could worsen political instability in Kano. He further cautioned that continued provocation of this nature might lead to drastic federal intervention, including the imposition of a state of emergency, similar to the one recently declared in Rivers State by the Bola Tinubu administration. Potential Political Fallout The escalating conflict between the ruling NNPP and opposition APC has raised concerns among political analysts about the future governance of Kano. Many fear that heightened political disputes could disrupt governance and public order in the state. External Perspectives and Expert Opinions According to a report by Premium Times (source), political analysts suggest that Kano’s situation requires careful handling to prevent further deterioration of peace and stability. If political actors do not exercise restraint, federal authorities may have no choice but to step in with stringent measures. Conclusion As the APC and NNPP continue their heated exchanges, Kano residents remain on edge, uncertain about how the unfolding political drama will affect the state’s governance. Stakeholders are urging both parties to prioritize dialogue over confrontation to avert potential unrest. The Coalition for Democracy and Development (CDD) has issued a strong call to action, urging key figures in the ongoing Rivers State political crisis, particularly Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, to sign a peace accord within the next 90 days. In a statement signed by its convener, Dr. George Ifure, the coalition emphasized that failure to reach a peaceful resolution would place full responsibility for the crisis squarely on both leaders. According to CDD, the persistent political turmoil in Rivers is a direct consequence of poor leadership and self-serving interests exhibited by both the current FCT Minister, Wike, and the incumbent governor, Fubara. Call for Immediate Action The coalition strongly criticized the decisions made by both politicians, highlighting that their actions have aggravated tensions in the state. CDD noted that the welfare of Rivers residents has been neglected in favor of personal political gains. Recent reports from LMSINT MEDIA confirm that the political crisis in Rivers has escalated to the extent that President Bola Tinubu was compelled to declare a state of emergency. This decision led to the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy, and all elected members of the state assembly. Despite the peace agreement signed between the two leaders in December 2023, tensions have continued to rise, making a fresh peace pact urgent. Nigerians Demand Accountability Concerned about the deteriorating situation, CDD has warned that Nigerians will hold Wike and Fubara accountable if they fail to take decisive steps toward peace. The coalition reiterated its stance: The coalition urged President Tinubu to make history by resolving the Rivers State crisis effectively and fairly, emphasizing that this moment requires bold and people-centered leadership. Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Nigeria’s South-South region have urged the Judiciary to nullify President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State, describing it as unconstitutional and an overreach of executive power. This appeal follows the National Assembly’s ratification of the President’s decision. In a joint statement released over the weekend and endorsed by more than 16 CSOs across the region, the organizations condemned Tinubu’s proclamation, asserting that it undermines democratic principles and the rule of law. They argued that the President’s invocation of Section 305 of the Nigerian Constitution lacked justification and was an outright violation of constitutional provisions. Violation of Section 305 of the Constitution According to the CSOs, Section 305 outlines specific conditions for declaring a state of emergency, including severe threats to national security, public safety, or the state’s existence. However, they insisted that none of these conditions were present in Rivers State, making the Federal Government’s action an excessive use of authority. Rather than pursuing a peaceful and democratic resolution to the political tensions in Rivers State, they accused the Federal Government of adopting an authoritarian stance that threatens constitutional governance. Legislative Complicity and Democratic Concerns The statement further criticized the National Assembly’s role in approving the proclamation. The CSOs highlighted procedural irregularities, such as the Senate’s use of a voice vote and the House of Representatives’ refusal to conduct a headcount, as clear breaches of the constitutional mandate that requires a two-thirds majority from both chambers to validate such a declaration. “We emphasize that the Nigerian Constitution does not authorize the President to remove an elected governor or dissolve a state legislature under any circumstances. If this unconstitutional move is not overturned, it will set a dangerous precedent, threatening democratic governance in other states,” the CSOs stated. Call for Judicial Intervention and Global Awareness The groups are urging the Judiciary to uphold constitutional law by annulling the state of emergency. Additionally, they demand the immediate reinstatement of Governor Sim Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly. Furthermore, they are calling on Nigerians and the international community to condemn this violation of democratic governance and resist any attempts to undermine Nigeria’s constitutional order For further insights into Nigeria’s constitutional provisions on states of emergency, refer to Nigeria’s Constitution and State of Emergency Guidelines. Shehu Sani on the High Cost of Recalling a Senator in Nigeria Former federal lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has emphasized the immense financial demands involved in recalling an incumbent senator. His statement comes amid growing discussions about an alleged attempt to unseat Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central in the Nigerian Senate. The speculation follows her accusations of sexual harassment against Senate President Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeriasparking political tension. In a Facebook post on Saturday, Shehu Sani disclosed that recalling a senator is an extremely costly endeavor that can only be effectively executed with substantial state financial backing. The Financial Burden of a Senatorial Recall According to Shehu Sani, any senator facing a recall must be prepared to either spend a significant amount of money or rely on unwavering support from their constituents to withstand the challenge. “A recall process is a financially draining venture that only the state can realistically support,” he noted. “The affected senator will either have to invest huge sums of money in countering the move or trust in the goodwill of their supporters.” The Pressure of Political Office Expanding on the struggles of public office holders, Sani described political positions as exhausting, consuming significant emotional, financial, and time resources. “Every elected official will inevitably face challenges. Holding office is like sitting on a throne of thorns—there is no peace or rest for those in power,” he explained. Reflecting on his own political experience, the former lawmaker pointed out how those in office often age quickly due to the constant pressures of governance. “The day you assume office as a councillor, lawmaker, governor, or president, you bid farewell to mental peace until your tenure ends. Power is far from a bed of roses,” he added. Senate Procedures and Recall Lawsa The process of recalling a senator in Nigeria is constitutionally possible but remains highly challenging due to its financial and procedural complexities. Given these hurdles, successful recalls have been rare in the country’s political landscape. For more information on legislative recall procedures, visit the Nigerian Senate website. Pastor Chris Oyakhilome DSc DSc DD For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries (1 Corinthians 14:2). When Jesus prayed on the Mount of Transfiguration, the Bible says His countenance and His clothes shimmered with glory (Matthew 17:2, Mark 9:3, Luke 9:29). The glory that radiated through Him wasn’t a one-time occurrence; it was something that happened every day in the spirit. However, on that occasion, their eyes were opened to witness it. In the same way, the glory of God resides within us. We don’t always see it outwardly, but it’s there, and on some occasions, others may perceive it. This, for instance, happened only once in the short ministry of Stephen. In Acts 6, Stephen was described as a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, performing great wonders and signs among the people. He was brought before the Sanhedrin (the Jewish council) after being accused of blasphemy against Moses and God. When he stood before the council to defend himself, the Bible says, “All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel” (Acts 6:15 NIV). They beheld the glory on the face of Stephen. This glory isn’t just on you today but inside you, and it’s described as the more excellent glory—“the glory that excelleth”: “For if the ministration of condemnation be glory, much more doth the ministration of righteousness exceed in glory. For even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that excelleth” (2 Corinthians 3:9-10). Every time you pray in tongues, this glory in you is activated. I’m not talking about the brief, casual, praying in tongues that some people do. I’m talking about when you pray in tongues deeply and passionately from and with your spirit. This is intense, where you give yourself fully to prayer. At such moments, the currents of divine power that’ll surge from your spirit through your physical body will be almost immediate. Practise this. Consistently give yourself to praying in tongues with a reverent and yielded heart, and you’ll experience divine vitality and strength. This is God’s plan for your life, so take it seriously. PRAYERDear Father, I thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit and the power of praying in tongues. I yield my heart and spirit to you as I pray, allowing your glory to surge and radiate through me. As I pray, I experience the fullness of your power; I walk in health and strength; I’m refreshed and vitalized by the Spirit, in Jesus’ Name. Amen. Dr. Tom FredFish, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom and Chairman of PDP Advocates for Peace and Justice (PAPAJ), has expressed strong disapproval over the declaration of a State of Emergency in Rivers State. He criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to suspend Governor Sim Fubara, attributing the ongoing crisis to the PDP’s failure to take decisive action against Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Presidential Bias and PDP’s Failure In an exclusive interview with LMSINT MEDIA, Dr. FredFish condemned the President’s stance on the Rivers crisis, describing it as politically motivated and a strategic move ahead of the 2027 elections. According to him, the PDP leadership, including Atiku Abubakar, failed to address Wike’s alleged anti-party activities, which contributed to the party’s internal discord. Why the PDP Remained Silent FredFish questioned why the PDP remained passive despite Wike’s alleged unruly behavior. He argued that the party’s loss in the 2023 elections left it too weak to discipline Wike, enabling him to maintain dominance within the party. He emphasized that Wike’s unwillingness to reconcile with Governor Fubara stemmed from a perception of power and self-importance, making genuine peace talks unfeasible. Lack of Leadership and Consequences Expressing dissatisfaction with the PDP leadership, FredFish criticized Atiku Abubakar for failing to act as an elder statesman. He warned that as long as Wike remains in the party, instability will persist. According to him, Wike’s influence has plunged the PDP into turmoil, and without firm disciplinary measures, the party risks losing credibility. Will APC Take Over Rivers State? Despite the crisis, FredFish dismissed the possibility of the All Progressives Congress (APC) taking over Rivers State before the 2027 elections. He highlighted the party’s unpopularity in the region, stating that Wike and the 27 Assembly members planned to impeach Fubara and defect to the APC, but public resistance thwarted their agenda. Implications of the Governor’s Suspension The six-month suspension of Governor Fubara poses significant threats to democracy and governance in Rivers State. FredFish outlined several concerns: Urgent Steps for PDP’s Survival FredFish urged the PDP to take immediate action, including: According to The Guardian, political analysts believe that unless the PDP resolves its internal crisis, it risks further fragmentation ahead of the 2027 elections. Conclusion The ongoing political unrest in Rivers State underscores the urgent need for decisive leadership within the PDP. As tensions escalate, the party must address internal conflicts to restore stability and strengthen its position in the national political landscape. In response to soaring egg prices caused by widespread avian flu outbreaks, the United States has begun importing eggs from Turkey and South Korea. Brooke Rollins, Agriculture Secretary to President Donald Trump, confirmed on Friday that these imports aim to stabilize the domestic supply and curb price inflation. US Imports Millions of Eggs to Counter Supply Shortages Rollins revealed that discussions are ongoing with additional countries to temporarily supplement the US egg supply. “We are securing hundreds of millions of eggs for the short term,” she stated, highlighting the urgency of the situation. Egg Prices Surge Amid Bird Flu Crisis The recent avian flu outbreaks have led to the culling of over 30 million birds across the United States, significantly disrupting the egg supply chain. The resulting shortage has caused egg prices to spike, making them a central issue in last year’s presidential election. During his campaign, Trump criticized the rising cost of essential goods under the previous administration, leveraging public frustration. After resuming office in January, Trump assigned Rollins the task of increasing egg supply and reducing prices. Since then, various international producers, including those in Poland and Lithuania, have reported inquiries from US officials seeking fresh egg imports. Global Egg Supply Adjustments and Future Outlook Katarzyna Gawronska, Director of Poland’s National Chamber of Poultry and Feed Producers, noted that egg shortages are affecting multiple nations. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported that wholesale egg prices have dropped nearly 50% since late February, suggesting a potential decrease in consumer costs soon. “The downward trend underscores the effectiveness of USDA’s approach,” the agency stated. Rollins assured reporters that these egg imports will cease once US poultry farms can restore adequate supply levels.
