Notably, it is translated as “obedient” only eight times for contextual relevance. In fact, it is translated as “hear” 785 times and as “hearken” 169 times. The reason I emphasize this is that even in this instance, where the translators believed “obedient” would be the best presentation, it’s not entirely accurate but still conveys a nice meaning. The phrase “if ye be willing and obedient” essentially means “if you truly hear me.” This is why they chose “obedient”—it reflects the dynamics of asking a child, “Did you hear me?” This often occurs when an instruction hasn’t been followed. So, when you say, “If you hear what I’m telling you…,” it implies “If you heed what I’m telling you,” which translates to “If you obey what I’m telling you.” The presentation of this verse in the Living Bible is quite remarkable; it says, “If you will only let me help you, if you will only obey, then I will make you rich.” What a statement! Can God truly do this, even in difficult situations? Can He do it in the slums, the impoverished neighbourhoods, or backsides of civilization? Can He do it for someone from your kind of family?
