Russia Says Ukraine is Ignoring Ceasefire Agreement Russia’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, has publicly accused Ukraine of disregarding a ceasefire agreement related to energy infrastructure. His comments came during a recent UN assembly, where several Western countries called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The joint statement—backed by Slovenia, Denmark, France, Greece, and the United Kingdom—urged Russia to demonstrate commitment to peace. However, Russia declined to endorse the comprehensive ceasefire, raising questions about its willingness to engage in diplomatic resolutions. Samuel Žbogar, Slovenia’s UN ambassador, emphasized Ukraine’s cooperation: “Ukraine desires peace and demonstrated this five weeks ago by accepting a full, immediate, and unconditional ceasefire. Unfortunately, Russia continues to resist making any constructive moves toward peace.” Ukraine and U.S. Sign Memorandum for Economic Reconstruction In a separate but significant development, Ukraine’s Economy Minister, Yulia Svyrydenko, announced the signing of a memorandum of intent with the United States of America to establish an investment fund aimed at rebuilding Ukraine’s war-torn infrastructure and economy. This planned partnership aims to attract global investors and boost Ukraine’s economic resilience in the aftermath of widespread destruction caused by the conflict. “This memorandum marks a critical step in Ukraine’s path toward economic recovery,” said Svyrydenko. “We’re hopeful this fund will help revitalize major industries and restore economic stability.” U.S. Promises Continued Support Scott Bessent, the U.S. Treasury Secretary, confirmed that a major financial deal is expected to be finalized by the weekend. Additionally, former U.S. President Donald Trump hinted at a forthcoming agreement on mineral resources, expected to be signed next Thursday, further deepening U.S.-Ukraine economic ties. This move reflects Washington’s ongoing commitment to Ukraine, both in financial terms and strategic support, amidst the country’s conflict with Russia. International Pressure Builds on Russia As Western nations align more closely with Ukraine, pressure is mounting on Russia to re-engage in meaningful peace talks and allow humanitarian progress through ceasefire compliance. Despite calls from the international community, Russia’s firm stance remains unchanged, leaving the situation tense. What This Means for Ukraine’s Future The U.S.-Ukraine memorandum is not just symbolic—it could pave the way for long-term economic revival, foreign direct investment, and geopolitical stability. However, until both parties fully commit to a ceasefire, peace may remain elusive. For more insights into the current geopolitical developments in Eastern Europe, visit BBC News for verified updates. Check out our global conflict coverage section for related stories and analysis. Ukraine’s efforts toward peace and reconstruction are evident through its cooperation with international allies. Tragic Aftermath of US Airstrikes in Yemen At least 33 people lost their lives, and more than 80 others were injured in a recent series of US airstrikes targeting Houthi rebels in Yemen. The attack, which occurred on a Friday, marks one of the most devastating single-day incidents since the US began this military campaign under the leadership of former President Donald Trump. According to United States Central Command (CENTCOM), the airstrikes were intended to strike the Ras Isa oil port, a crucial facility believed to fund Houthi military activities. “These strikes were aimed at disrupting illegal revenue that the Houthis have used to fuel terror across the region for more than a decade,” said CENTCOM in a statement. “We did not intend to harm the Yemeni people, who deserve to live free from Houthi oppression and in peace.” Horrifying Visuals From the Strike Site The Houthis’ media outlet, Al-Masirah, released graphic footage showing burnt bodies and widespread devastation. They claim that paramedics and civilian port workers were among the victims. The impact triggered a massive explosion followed by uncontrollable fires, further complicating rescue efforts. This attack has sparked international concern, with human rights organizations calling for independent investigations into the civilian casualties. The situation continues to escalate, drawing the attention of both regional and global powers. A Shift in US Military Tactics? An Associated Press analysis indicates that the current operations under Trump are more aggressive compared to those during President Joe Biden’s administration. While Biden’s strategy focused primarily on missile launch sites, the Trump-led offensive now appears to target top Houthi leaders and even urban areas. The renewed aggression follows recent threats from the Houthis to resume attacks on Israeli ships, a move that coincides with Israel’s blockade of aid to Gaza. Related: Understanding the Ongoing Conflict in Yemen and the Houthi Movement — BBC News US State Department’s Warning on Oil Shipments Prior to the attack, the US State Department issued a security alert on April 9, warning international shipping companies about potential threats involving oil shipments to Yemen. The alert was reportedly tied to growing concerns over Houthi control of critical energy infrastructure and its possible use in regional destabilization efforts. Impact on Civilians and International Response The recent escalation has drawn widespread criticism. International humanitarian organizations, including Amnesty International, have expressed grave concerns over the impact of airstrikes on civilians and called for adherence to international humanitarian laws. Meanwhile, Middle East analysts warn that continued military aggression could fuel further instability not just in Yemen but across the Red Sea corridor, a vital passage for global trade. Read also on LMSINT MEDIA: What Does a Ceasefire Mean in International Conflicts? Conclusion While the US military insists the Yemen airstrikes were targeted and necessary, the high civilian death toll raises critical questions about collateral damage, accountability, and the future of peace in Yemen. As the conflict continues, global stakeholders must prioritize diplomatic solutions over military actions. What Happened in Akure? The Ondo State Police Command has publicly dismissed widespread reports suggesting that a vehicle in the convoy of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was responsible for the tragic death of a nine-year-old girl in Akure on Thursday, April 17, 2025. Contrary to viral claims made by media outlets such as Sahara Reporters, the police have confirmed that the First Lady’s convoy was not connected to the incident in any way. Police Investigation Reveals Truth Behind the Incident In an official statement, DSP Olufunmilayo Ayanlade, the Command’s spokesperson, clarified that eyewitness accounts and early investigations revealed that an unregistered white Lexus vehicle was responsible for the hit-and-run incident. “The report published by Sahara Reporters was misleading and lacked factual accuracy. The First Lady’s convoy was not present at the scene of the accident,” Ayanlade said. A witness reportedly chased the fleeing Lexus driver using a motorcycle, tracking the direction the vehicle took after the crash. The accident occurred in the Oba-Ile area of Akure, where the girl was fatally hit while crossing the road. Police Commissioner Visits Victim’s Family In a compassionate move, the Commissioner of Police for Ondo State Command personally visited the grieving family to extend condolences and assure them of a transparent and thorough investigation. “We remain committed to uncovering the identity of the hit-and-run driver and bringing justice to the victim’s family,” the statement concluded. Why Was Oluremi Tinubu in Ondo State? The First Lady was in Ondo State to spearhead the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Outreach, a program under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI). During her visit, she distributed over 10,000 medical kits, including Crocs and scrubs, to licensed midwives across the South-West geopolitical zone. In a tragic incident on Wednesday, thirty-six cows were killed, and forty-two others were left critically ill in Plateau State due to suspected poisoning. The event occurred in the Tafi Gana junction area, located in the Bassa Local Government Area (LGA), around 4:30 p.m., as the cattle were grazing. Ya’u Idris, the Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Bassa LGA, confirmed the occurrence. He explained that the cattle had ingested garden eggs laced with poison that had been intentionally scattered across the grazing area. “We had 78 cattle grazing in the vicinity. As of now, 36 have died, and 42 others are critically ill. The outcome remains uncertain for them due to the poisoning,” Idris shared with the press. The poisoning incident was swiftly reported to various security bodies, including the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the police. Idris confirmed that the GOC had visited the site and reassured the community that an investigation was underway. “The GOC has advised us to refrain from taking matters into our own hands, assuring us that the perpetrators will face justice,” Idris stated. He further called for calm among Fulani residents in the area, especially as tensions rise in light of previous violent events. This cattle poisoning came just two days after a deadly attack in Zikke village, also in Bassa LGA, which resulted in the deaths of 52 people and left many others injured. Several houses were set ablaze during the violence, which some residents attributed to members of the herding community—a claim the herders have strongly denied. These recent events have sparked fears of possible retaliatory violence in the region, which has historically seen conflicts between farming and herding communities. In light of the growing insecurity, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang announced new restrictions on Wednesday. These include a ban on night grazing, cattle transportation, and motorcycle movements beyond 7 p.m. The measures aim to reduce the risk of further violence and restore order to the affected areas. On Thursday, European and Ukrainian representatives gathered in Paris for high-level talks aimed at securing support for Kyiv in its ongoing conflict with Russia. The discussions included key figures such as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Steve Witkoff, an envoy from former President Donald Trump’s administration. The talks, which were part of ongoing diplomatic efforts, reflect Europe’s growing concerns about the Trump administration’s favorable stance towards Moscow, especially in light of the US’s unsuccessful attempts to broker a ceasefire in the three-year-long Russia-Ukraine war. The diplomatic dialogue extended beyond the Ukraine conflict to include discussions on nuclear negotiations with Iran, which were also on the agenda during the visit. Growing Frustration Over US-Russia Relations President Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to bring an end to the war in Ukraine as quickly as possible. However, his administration has shown signs of frustration with both Moscow and Kyiv. This shift in US rhetoric has been characterized by a growing tendency to support Russia’s version of the conflict, which has alarmed European and Ukrainian officials. Recently, Ukraine had agreed to a ceasefire proposal put forward by Trump’s administration, but Russia rejected it. This deadlock has only heightened tensions and prolonged the war. So far, the only agreements between the two sides have been to limit attacks on energy infrastructure and naval operations, although both sides accuse each other of violating these agreements. Kyiv and European Allies Urge Tougher US Stance Kyiv and its European allies continue to blame Moscow for the failure of the ceasefire initiative and are now pushing for Washington to adopt a firmer stance against Russia. The urgency of the matter was underscored by a Russian attack over the weekend in Sumy, Ukraine, which killed several civilians, including Christian worshippers. In response, former President Trump stated, “I’m just trying to get it stopped so that we can save a lot of lives,” emphasizing the importance of ending the violence. In a powerful testimony, Love Ogah, the daughter of Bishop David Oyedepo, the founder of Living Faith Worldwide, shared an extraordinary experience from her childhood years. She recalled a chilling event when a group of hired assassins tried to kill her father at their home in Lagos. However, what unfolded that day defied all logical explanation and showcased an act of divine intervention. The Assassins’ Mission and Search for Bishop Oyedepo Love Ogah detailed how the assassins stormed their family residence with a clear mission: to end the life of the renowned preacher. The group openly declared their intentions, stating that they were there to kill Bishop Oyedepo. The assassins proceeded to ransack the house, searching every room for hours, but despite their extensive search, they failed to find the target they were looking for. “The assassins came and said they came to kill my father. They searched everywhere, room to room, but couldn’t find him,” Love Ogah recalled. Their disbelief grew as they searched every part of the house without success. The longer they searched, the more they grew puzzled and frustrated by the absence of their intended target. The Miraculous Blindness of the Assassins After the assassins left empty-handed, Love Ogah’s father, Bishop Oyedepo, emerged from hiding and explained the miracle that had occurred. He revealed that while the assassins searched the house, he was actually present the entire time. Yet, in a supernatural act, the killers were blinded and unable to see him. “My father came out and said he saw them the whole time—they just couldn’t see him. All of us were looking like it was a film trick,” Love Ogah said, reflecting on how the event felt almost unreal. The family was left in awe as they learned that their lives had been spared by a miraculous act of divine protection. The Power of Divine Intervention Bishop Oyedepo went on to explain that the assailants were supernaturally blinded, and this act of divine intervention prevented the tragedy from unfolding. The entire family, including Love Ogah, was left in awe of the protection that had been extended over them during such a dangerous moment. This story serves as a testament to the power of faith and the protection that can be provided through divine intervention. It’s a powerful reminder of the spiritual realm’s ability to intervene in moments of danger, ensuring the safety of those under divine protection. Water scarcity has reached alarming levels in Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, with residents resorting to using stagnant pools, ponds, and other unsafe water sources for their daily needs. In several communities, residents have been seen scooping murky water from shallow, open ponds, often contaminated with animal waste and debris. These dangerous water sources have become their only option for drinking, cooking, bathing, and washing, leading to serious public health concerns. In Angwan Kuje, local resident Adefu Ruth expressed her frustration: “We haven’t had tap water for over two months. We now depend on this dirty water because we have no other choice.” Similarly, Luka Akiwa spoke to DAILY POST correspondent, emphasizing the lack of action from local leaders: “We have a Senator and a Commissioner for Water Resources, whose homes are just about 400 meters from where the people fetch this water. Yet, nothing has been done.” Jane Albert, another concerned resident, shared her distress: “This water smells and changes color every day. What can we do? Not everyone can afford bottled water or has the means to travel long distances for clean water.” During a visit, the correspondent observed residents struggling to fetch water from a tanker, thought to have been donated by an indigene of the community to help alleviate the suffering. Local leaders attribute the crisis to several failed boreholes, dried wells, and a general breakdown of public water infrastructure. Despite the growing concerns, Muluku Aggah, the Commissioner for Water Resources and Rural Development in Nasarawa State, who hails from Nasarawa Eggon, has yet to publicly address the situation. Efforts to get a response from him were unsuccessful. When the reporter visited the Ministry of Water Resources and Rural Development, a security guard at the gate confirmed that the Commissioner was not in the office. A ministry staff member, speaking anonymously, assured that the ministry was aware of the situation and was working on repairing some of the faulty boreholes. However, the staff member could not provide a timeline for when water supply would be restored. The Role of Electricity in Nigeria’s Industrialisation Drive According to Minister Idris, uninterrupted 24-hour electricity supply is not just desirable but essential if Nigeria is to succeed in its goal of becoming a fully industrialised economy. CJTF’s Unwavering Mission Against Insurgency in Lagos The Commander of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) in Lagos State, Mr. Kumar Sanda, has disclosed that thousands of individuals suspected to be Boko Haram members have been arrested across the state over time. Sanda made this known during an award ceremony held at the Airport Hotel in Lagos, where the CJTF was recognized as the “Best Security Group in Lagos” by the Nigerian Human Rights Community. “If I tell you the exact number of Boko Haram members we’ve arrested, it would be unbelievable. But the reality is—thousands have been apprehended,” said Sanda. Routine Surveillance to Prevent Insurgency in Lagos Speaking at the event, Commander Sanda explained how the CJTF has been conducting routine surveillance and strategic arrests at critical locations such as: These areas have reportedly been entry points for insurgents and bandits relocating from the northern region due to ongoing military operations. Supporting the Lagos State Government’s Security Goals Commander Sanda emphasized the CJTF’s dedication to maintaining peace and safety in Lagos by working closely with the Lagos State Government. He noted that their efforts are aimed at ensuring terrorist elements do not find a safe haven in the state. “The Chief of Staff to the Lagos State Governor is in constant communication with us to ensure residents can sleep peacefully,” he said. Insurgents Not Always Nigerian – Sanda Warns Sanda further cautioned against assuming that all insurgents are Nigerians. He mentioned that many terrorists and bandits infiltrate Nigeria through porous borders and pose as locals, making identification difficult. “When you see someone from Borno, you may feel uneasy—but many of those involved in insurgency are not even Nigerians,” Sanda explained. He highlighted the importance of ethnic self-awareness in identifying potential threats. According to him, indigenes from Borno, Kano, and other northern states are often able to recognize unfamiliar faces attempting to blend in. Community Vigilance: A Shared Responsibility The CJTF Commander urged Lagos residents to remain vigilant and proactive, stressing that while not all Northern Nigerians are insurgents, citizens must be careful and observant. “Not all Abokis are bad—but not all are good either. In a significant victory for justice and human rights, a Lagos Magistrate Court has officially discharged and released Alabi Quadri, the teenager who gained national attention during the 2023 general election campaign after he boldly stood in front of Peter Obi’s convoy. Background: A Symbol of Protest and Courage Quadri’s brave act, captured in viral videos in the buildup to the 2023 presidential election, turned him into a symbol of youthful courage and political awareness. During the campaign trail, he stood in front of the convoy of then-presidential candidate Peter Obi of the Labour Party, earning widespread admiration across Nigeria. However, this symbolic gesture came at a great personal cost. The teenager was later arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit felony and armed robbery, which led to his detention at Kirikiri Prison for several months. Court Clears All Charges Against Alabi Quadri On Thursday, Quadri finally got his day in court. Appearing before Magistrate Adetola Olorunfemi at the Apapa Magistrate Court, he was declared free of all charges. The ruling followed legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who stated that there was no substantial evidence to support the claims of armed robbery. According to court records, the DPP emphasized that there was no case to answer, which led to an immediate order for Quadri’s release. “There is no proof that the minor committed any criminal offense,” the DPP affirmed in the legal report submitted to the court. How the Date Was Fast-Tracked by Legal Advocates Initially, Quadri’s next hearing was scheduled for April 28, 2025, but human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong intervened. Effiong, known for his commitment to justice and civil liberties, worked alongside the DPP to request an earlier date. The court approved the motion, enabling a quicker resolution of the case. Effiong revealed on his social media channels that Quadri’s arrest and imprisonment were largely due to harassment from area boys—local gangs or thugs in his neighborhood—rather than any proven criminal activity. He further stressed that the teenager had no ties to crime but was caught in a web of social injustice and systemic abuse. A Call for Nigerian Prison Reform Quadri’s story once again highlights the urgent need for reform in Nigeria’s correctional and judicial systems. His wrongful imprisonment points to deeper issues of youth profiling, abuse of power, and the mistreatment of minors within the justice system. According to a report from Amnesty International, thousands of Nigerian detainees, particularly minors, are held without trial for long periods due to systemic failures. Conclusion: Justice Served, But More Work Needed While the court’s decision to free Quadri is a step in the right direction, it also underscores the need for continuous advocacy, legal intervention, and reform. The brave teenager is now free, but his experience serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by vulnerable youths in Nigeria. As the country moves forward, voices like Effiong’s and actions like those of the DPP are vital in ensuring that justice prevails for every Nigerian—regardless of age, status, or background.
