Eric Chelle’s Decision to Include Two NPFL Players in Super Eagles’ World Cup Qualifiers Squad
Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has revealed his reasons for including two local talents from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) in his final 23-man squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
Recently, Chelle finalized his squad list, featuring Remo Stars goalkeeper, Kayode Bankole, and Niger Tornadoes midfielder, Papa Daniel. These selections mark a significant step in recognizing local league players for international duty.
Chelle’s Observation of NPFL Players Before Selection
The Malian coach, who assumed leadership of the Nigerian national team in January, closely monitored several NPFL matches before making his selection. His decision to invite Bankole and Daniel was based on their performances and potential contributions to the team.
During a pre-match press conference, ahead of Nigeria’s fixture against Zimbabwe, Chelle shared his insights on the inclusion of the two home-based players.
Coach Chelle’s Justification for Including NPFL Players
“My responsibility is to assess all Nigerian players globally and analyze their potential, as this is a crucial FIFA World Cup qualifying phase,” Chelle explained.
“Beyond the World Cup qualifiers, we also have the CHAN and AFCON tournaments to prepare for, so we must build a strong team foundation.”
He emphasized that integrating local league players strengthens the national team’s future:
“There are many Nigerian talents who can contribute to our squad. However, they need to understand my tactical approach and playing philosophy,” he added.
“This is why I included two players from the NPFL. I believe they have the talent and potential to play a vital role in the team’s future. However, they must train hard and adapt to our system.”
Chelle also stressed the importance of long-term development, stating:
“We are preparing for the future, but we must act now. As I mentioned in my first press conference, time is a coach’s greatest enemy.”
Super Eagles’ Road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup
The Super Eagles continue their preparations as they gear up to face Rwanda and Zimbabwe in their World Cup qualifying matches. With the addition of two NPFL stars, Chelle aims to blend experience with emerging talents to strengthen Nigeria’s squad.
