A devastating airstrike by Sudan’s military targeted a bustling market in North Darfur, claiming over 100 lives and leaving hundreds injured. The attack occurred in Kabkabiya, approximately 180 kilometers west of El-Fasher, during the town’s weekly market day. Residents from nearby villages had gathered, making the tragedy even more catastrophic, according to the Emergency Lawyers, a pro-democracy advocacy group documenting the ongoing conflict.
The war between the Sudanese military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has caused tens of thousands of deaths, displaced over 11 million people, and plunged Sudan into a humanitarian crisis the United Nations describes as unprecedented in modern history.
Humanitarian Toll and Escalation
Footage from civil society groups revealed harrowing scenes of destruction, showing survivors sifting through rubble and burned remains. While the RSF has used drones in some attacks, only the Sudanese army possesses fighter jets, maintaining air dominance over the war-ravaged region.
The Sudanese military defended its operations, claiming to target rebel bases, while dismissing allegations of civilian casualties as “lies” spread by RSF-affiliated groups. However, reports from eyewitnesses and humanitarian organizations paint a grim picture of deliberate attacks on civilian areas, contradicting both sides’ claims of targeting only military assets.
Regional Devastation
Darfur, a region as large as France, has become a focal point of violence, with the RSF controlling much of the area. Meanwhile, clashes in other parts of Sudan, including Omdurman, have intensified. On Monday, paramilitary shelling of a passenger bus in Omdurman killed at least 15 people, with hospitals overwhelmed by casualties.
Civilian Impact and International Condemnation
Both warring factions stand accused of war crimes, including indiscriminate bombings and targeting residential areas. Human Rights Watch recently condemned RSF and allied Arab militias for committing atrocities against civilians, particularly in South Kordofan, urging international bodies to intervene to protect vulnerable populations.
The violence shows no signs of abating, with escalating strikes creating unbearable conditions for millions of displaced Sudanese. Calls for international action grow louder as civilians bear the brunt of this relentless conflict.
