Stop Negotiating with Terrorists – Obasanjo Urges Nigerian Government

Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has strongly advised the Federal Government to discontinue its approach of negotiating or offering apologies to terrorists. He stressed that such actions could weaken national security strategies and embolden violent groups across the country.

Obasanjo delivered this firm message during the Plateau State Unity Christmas Carol and Praise Festival held in Jos, the capital city of Plateau State. Addressing participants at the event, he emphasized that Nigeria must adopt a more decisive and coordinated method of tackling terrorism, rather than relying on dialogue with criminal armed groups.

According to the former president, a nation must not allow terror organizations to dictate terms or influence government decisions. He noted that consistent negotiations may create the impression that the government lacks the strength or the will to confront insecurity effectively. Obasanjo further stressed that sustainable peace requires robust security architecture, strong community cooperation, and a leadership approach that does not encourage violent groups seeking concessions.
