Spain Declares Three Days of Mourning After Deadly High-Speed Train Collision

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has declared three days of national mourning following a catastrophic high-speed train collision in southern Spain that has claimed the lives of at least 40 people.

The tragic incident occurred on Sunday evening near the city of Adamuz, when one train traveling from Málaga to Madrid derailed and crossed into the path of an oncoming train traveling from Madrid to Huelva, leading to one of the deadliest rail accidents in Spain in over a decade. More than 120 people were injured, and rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate survivors amid the twisted wreckage.

Prime Minister Sánchez emphasized the government’s commitment to uncovering the root cause of the collision, promising a full and transparent investigation.

“We are determined to find the truth. When the cause of this tragedy is determined, it will be made public with complete transparency,” Sánchez stated during a visit to the crash site.

Details of the Train Crash

According to rail network operator Adif, the collision occurred at 19:45 local time (18:45 GMT), approximately one hour after the train departed from Málaga. The derailed train veered off a straight stretch of track near Córdoba, colliding head-on with the Madrid-bound train.

Transport Minister Óscar Puente reported that the force of the impact pushed the carriages of the second train into a nearby embankment. Most casualties and serious injuries were reported in the front carriages of the train traveling south from Madrid.

Rescue efforts have been challenging due to the extensive damage. The twisted metal and debris have hindered the safe extraction of passengers trapped inside the carriages.

“Rescue operations are extremely complex due to the condition of the wreckage,” Puente said.

Investigation Underway

An initial report cited by Reuters mentioned that a faulty rail joint may have contributed to the crash. Experts suggested that a gap between rail sections was widening as trains passed over it, potentially playing a key role in the accident. However, Spain’s El País newspaper highlighted that it remains unclear whether the joint failure was a cause or consequence of the derailment.

Minister Puente described the incident as “extremely strange”, noting that the investigation could take at least a month to complete. Authorities are also working to identify the victims, as the death toll is not yet final.

Passenger and Train Information

The collision involved approximately 400 passengers and staff. Emergency services treated 122 individuals, with 41 hospitalized, including children. Among those hospitalized, 12 remain in intensive care.

The trains involved were Freccia 1000 high-speed trains, capable of reaching speeds up to 400 km/h (250 mph), according to a spokesperson from the Italian rail company Ferrovie dello Stato.

Government Response and Public Mourning

Prime Minister Sánchez visited the scene alongside Transport Minister Óscar Puente and First Deputy Prime Minister María Jesús Montero to pay tribute to the victims. Public mourning across Spain will continue for three days, reflecting the scale of the national tragedy.

Spanish authorities have promised full transparency throughout the investigation and emphasized the importance of learning from the incident to prevent future rail disasters.
