Human rights activist and political commentator Omoyele Sowore has been granted bail on self-recognition by Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court. The ruling was delivered on Tuesday after Sowore was brought before the court by officials of the Department of State Services (DSS).

During the court session, Justice Umar cautioned Sowore to avoid making statements capable of provoking public unrest or inciting citizens against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The judge emphasized that his freedom must not be used to create tension or undermine public order, especially through public comments or online activities.

Sowore’s arraignment stems from a five-count charge filed against him by the DSS. The charges are related to allegations of cybercrime, with prosecutors claiming that some of Sowore’s online posts violated certain provisions of Nigeria’s cyber laws. Although he pleaded not guilty, the court stressed the importance of maintaining respect for lawful procedures while the case proceeds.

The activist, known for his strong criticism of government policies and leadership, has been at the center of various controversies involving freedom of speech, online activism, and political protests over the years. His latest bail conditions reflect the court’s attempt to balance his right to expression with national stability.

Sowore’s legal team expressed relief at the bail ruling, describing it as a victory for justice and fundamental rights. Meanwhile, discussions continue nationwide about the boundaries of online expression, political commentary, and the responsibilities that come with digital influence.

As the trial continues, observers are closely monitoring how the case may affect future interpretations of cybercrime laws and the rights of activists, journalists, and citizens using digital platforms to express dissent.
