Tottenham Hotspur’s long-serving captain, Son Heung-min, has officially announced that he will part ways with the club during this summer’s transfer window, drawing the curtain on a remarkable decade-long spell in north London.

The 33-year-old South Korean forward, who joined Tottenham Hotspur from German Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen back in 2015, has represented the English Premier League outfit in over 450 competitive matches, becoming a club icon in the process.

Despite lifting the Europa League trophy in May — Tottenham’s first European success in more than four decades — the attacker admitted that he endured a frustrating season marred by several leg injuries, and performances below his usual elite standards.

During a press conference held in Seoul, South Korea, where Spurs are currently conducting their pre-season tour, Son emotionally shared his intentions with journalists.

“Before we start the press conference, I just want to let everyone know that I’ve decided to leave the club this summer,” he revealed solemnly.

He expressed gratitude towards the club, stating:

“I truly respect how the club is supporting me in this very personal decision.”

Having amassed an impressive total of 173 goals for Spurs, Son has kept fans guessing about his next destination. Though he remained tight-lipped on his immediate future, speculation has linked him with a move to Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States.

“It’s been the toughest decision I’ve made in my entire career,” he confessed, standing alongside newly appointed Spurs manager, Thomas Frank.

“I’ve built unforgettable memories here. It’s extremely hard to walk away. But I feel it’s time for a new challenge, a new environment that can push me further. Ten years is a significant chapter of my life.”

Reflecting on his personal growth, Son added:

“I arrived in north London as a 23-year-old boy, and now I’m leaving as a fully grown, proud man.”

Speaking in his native Korean language, Son emphasized that Tottenham’s recent Europa League victory played a major role in shaping his exit decision.

“To win a European title with Tottenham — the club’s first in 41 years — made me feel I had reached the peak of what I could accomplish here.”

He continued:

“I spent a lot of time thinking deeply about whether I wanted to continue in this same space or take a leap into something different. It’s a thought I wrestled with repeatedly.”

Thomas Frank, who joined Tottenham from Brentford just this June following the dismissal of Ange Postecoglou, paid a glowing tribute to his departing captain.

“From a personal standpoint, I would’ve loved to work with such an incredible individual and world-class player,” Frank stated warmly.

“Son is a Spurs legend in every sense. He’s undeniably one of the greatest footballers to ever grace the Premier League.”

Tottenham will face Newcastle United in Seoul on Sunday, and Son is expected to receive an electrifying welcome from the home crowd, likely marking his final match in front of his fellow South Koreans while wearing the Spurs jersey.

So far, Tottenham’s summer transfer activities have remained modest. Their only major acquisition has been Mohammed Kudus, an attacking midfielder secured from West Ham United.

Meanwhile, a potential transfer involving Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest collapsed after a reported £60 million deal fell through.
