Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has issued a heartfelt apology to the families of civilians who tragically lost their lives during an airstrike in Silame Local Government Area, Sokoto State.

The Vice President’s statement, released through his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, acknowledged the unintended casualties that occurred on Wednesday, December 25, during military operations targeting a logistics hub of the Lakurawa insurgent group.

LMSINT MEDIA recalls that the airstrikes, part of a coordinated effort under “Operation Fansan Yamma,” mistakenly struck Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities, leading to the loss of 10 innocent lives.

Addressing the unfortunate incident, Vice President Shettima extended his condolences, describing the event as a deeply saddening episode of civilian loss amidst the nation’s ongoing battle against terrorism.

“We deeply regret the civilian casualties and the excruciating pain caused by this operation. I extend my profound sympathies to the people of Sokoto State and, most importantly, to the families affected by this tragic mistake,” Shettima stated.

He called for greater understanding and collaboration between citizens and the armed forces, emphasizing that the military’s efforts aim to protect innocent lives, even in challenging circumstances.

The Vice President urged residents to assist military officers by providing accurate intelligence to ensure precision in operations and prevent unintended harm to civilians.

He further reaffirmed the Federal Government’s dedication to eliminating terrorism, pledging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration remains committed to protecting Nigerians and ensuring peace across the country.

“On behalf of our courageous troops, I offer my sincere apologies for this loss. Our officers need your support, especially those in the flashpoints of terrorism, to make our collective fight against insurgency a success,” Shettima remarked.

The Vice President highlighted the bravery and dedication of Nigerian armed forces and appealed for solidarity, stressing that security is a collective responsibility.

“Together, with resilience and unity, we can overcome the monstrous threat of terror and create a safer Nigeria for all,” he concluded.
