Sokoto Airstrike: Families of 13 Civilians Receive Official Compensation

In a significant move towards justice and reconciliation, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has officially provided compensation to victims and the families impacted by the unfortunate airstrike that occurred on December 25, 2024, in Sokoto State.

The airstrike, which was classified as accidental, affected residents of Gidan Bisa and Rumtuwa villages within the Silame Local Government Area. Families of the 13 civilians who suffered losses have now received financial redress as part of the NAF’s efforts to address the tragedy and support affected communities.

This information was formally confirmed in a statement issued by Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the Director of Public Relations and Information for the Nigerian Air Force, on Sunday in Abuja. The statement highlighted the Air Force’s commitment to accountability and its ongoing efforts to maintain trust with local populations in regions affected by military operations.

During the compensation ceremony, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, conveyed his message through AVM Edward Gabkwet, the Chief of Civil-Military Relations. He emphasized the importance of strong collaboration between the military and state governments in promoting peace and security.

Air Marshal Aneke praised the Sokoto State government for nurturing a productive relationship with the NAF and for implementing inclusive policies that prioritize citizen welfare. In particular, he lauded Governor Ahmed Aliyu for his 9-Point Smart Agenda, which incorporates innovative development and security initiatives, including the establishment of the Sokoto State Community Guards Corps.

According to the CAS, the governor’s proactive and localized security measures have significantly complemented federal operations in countering terrorism and banditry. These efforts have collectively contributed to improved safety and security across several communities in Sokoto State, reinforcing the critical role of civil-military cooperation in maintaining peace and stability.
