Simeone: After Fatal Floods, There's No Use In Playing La Liga Games.

Following fatal flooding in the eastern region of Spain, Diego Simeone, the coach of Atletico Madrid, stated on Saturday that it makes “no sense” to play La Liga games this weekend.

Devastating flash floods struck the Valencia region this week, killing at least 211 people.

Champions Simeone stated that all games ought to have been canceled, however Real Madrid’s trip to Valencia and Villarreal’s game against Rayo Vallecano were postponed.

Before Atletico’s Sunday matchup with Las Palmas, Simeone told reporters, “It’s obvious that it makes no sense, what is happening is something that’s so hard.”

The La Liga leader tweeted, “We believe that the best message in the awful situation that Spain is going through is not to stop, apart from in the affected areas.”

“The best message is to be on the front lines at work, just like employees in every other sector, generating resources, bringing attention to the situation, and telling the world that we must all work together to move forward.”

Jose Castillejo, a former Valencia defender, was one of 158 people killed in Spain’s flash floods.

This weekend’s La Liga games have a moment of silence before to kickoff in remembrance of the victims.

The Spanish league announced on Thursday that it is collaborating with the Red Cross organization to raise money for disaster relief during this weekend’s top two level fixtures.
