On Thursday, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) launched its first-ever military diplomacy and sensitisation campaign in Yola South Local Government Area, located in Adamawa State. The campaign called on citizens to foster peace, security, and patriotism within their communities.
The event, organized by the Directorate of Defence Media Operations, took place at Shagari Primary School, with the aim of enhancing civil-military relations through open dialogue and mutual trust.
Commander Godwin Egbunu, who headed the DHQ delegation, explained that this initiative was inspired by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa. It is part of broader efforts to strengthen collaboration between the military and local communities across Nigeria.
“We are here to appreciate your support and to encourage you to share credible intelligence with us. Our message is also to discourage participation in criminal activities, cultism, and kidnapping. The military is your friend, not your enemy,” Egbunu stated.
He emphasized the need for peaceful coexistence, urging residents to report grievances to nearby military formations to help avoid communal clashes. Furthermore, Egbunu called on parents to monitor their children’s behavior and warned against the spread of fake news via social media, noting that misinformation disrupts national peace.
Egbunu also highlighted the military’s non-combat roles, such as offering medical outreach, educational support, and providing boreholes. He stressed the importance of community trust and engagement in achieving these goals.
Brig.-Gen. Paul Zawaya, Commander of the 23 Brigade Yola, spoke through the Brigade’s Intelligence Officer, Lt.-Col. Felix Ayeni, to express gratitude to the residents and local authorities. He acknowledged their significant contribution to the success of Operation Farauta in the state.
Yola South LGA Chairman, Salihu Malkohi, represented by the Director of Media and Public Affairs, Aliyu Isah, thanked the DHQ for choosing the community as the campaign venue. He reaffirmed the local government’s commitment to collaborating with security forces and even offered additional land for the establishment of military barracks.
Community leaders attending the event praised the initiative, noting that it helped humanize the military in the eyes of the public and encouraged future engagements.
“This has changed how many of us view the military,” said Darius Susarumso, a civil servant. “They should take this kind of outreach to other regions of the country, especially conflict zones.”
This campaign marks a new chapter in the military’s strategy to engage civilians as key stakeholders in fostering lasting peace and security nationwide.
