A heartbreaking tragedy struck Sokoto State on Monday when a canoe accident led to the death of seven individuals.
According to reliable sources, the victims were en route from Gidan Hussaini to Sabon Garin Hussaini when the canoe they were traveling in capsized. The incident was reported on Tuesday by a recognized security analyst, Zagazola Makama, through a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).
The unfortunate accident reportedly occurred around 11:00 a.m., resulting in the drowning of everyone on board, including the individual steering the canoe. Emergency responders were immediately dispatched to the riverside to manage the situation and restrict access, particularly to prevent the overwhelming presence of concerned family members.
A local volunteer rescue team managed to recover the deceased bodies shortly after the accident. These remains were respectfully returned to their respective families for burial rites.
Such recurring accidents highlight the urgent need for enhanced river safety awareness and preventive measures in rural communities dependent on water transportation.
