The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday called on the military to urgently deploy adequate troops to the North-East following the deadly attack that left 12 soldiers dead in Marte, Borno State.

Lawmakers emphasized the importance of equipping personnel with advanced military technologies to effectively curb the recent resurgence of Boko Haram insurgency in the region.

This resolution followed a motion titled “The Resurgence of Boko Haram in Borno and Yobe,” which was presented by Senate Chief Whip, Mohammed Monguno. The motion received support from other Senators representing constituencies in Yobe and Borno States.

In his submission, Monguno highlighted that over the past few years, Boko Haram had taken control of nearly two-thirds of local government areas in Borno State. However, through combined operations by the Nigerian military and the Civilian Joint Task Force, many of these territories were eventually reclaimed, granting residents restored freedom and movement.

Following a period of relative peace in both Borno and Yobe, the military had moved its operational focus to the North-West in response to rising cases of banditry and kidnapping in that zone.

Unfortunately, on Monday, May 12, insurgents launched a fatal attack in Marte town within Marte Local Government Area, killing over a dozen soldiers.

Monguno expressed deep concern over the re-emergence of Boko Haram’s violence despite previous counter-insurgency successes. He explained that the terrorists now possess improved technological capabilities, such as drones, which they use to target vulnerable communities.

The insurgents have also intensified their use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), planting them in strategic locations. These explosives cause significant casualties and severely restrict transportation routes when detonated.

As previously reported, suspected Boko Haram fighters ambushed a military base in Marte LGA, leading to the death of over 12 Nigerian soldiers.
