As legislative activities resume on Tuesday, 6th May 2025, following the Easter and Sallah holidays, the 10th National Assembly is poised to address two critical issues—comprehensive tax system reforms and the intensifying political crisis in Rivers State.
Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, the Majority Leader of the 10th Senate, emphasized that the passage of four vital tax-related bills will be at the forefront of the Senate’s legislative schedule. These bills, he noted, are central to reforming Nigeria’s tax infrastructure, thereby improving revenue generation across the federation. According to him, such financial improvements would empower governments at all levels to undertake developmental projects and strengthen democratic dividends for the citizens.
Bamidele also highlighted that the Senate will work closely with the executive branch to resolve political conflicts, with particular attention to the escalating tension in Rivers State. The goal, he said, is to restore stability and peace in the oil-rich Niger Delta region, which remains a strategic economic hub.
In a statement released by his media office in Abuja, the Senate Leader raised alarm over the surge in insecurity nationwide, citing increasing violence in Benue, Borno, Katsina, and Plateau States. He stressed that the Red Chamber would engage with security stakeholders to formulate robust mechanisms aimed at effectively managing national security challenges.
“As the nation’s apex lawmaking institution, the Senate is fully committed to legislating for peace, order, and good governance,” Bamidele stated. “We are prepared to engage all relevant actors in the security sector to devise sustainable strategies to counter terrorism and insurgency.”
He further assured Nigerians that the Constitution Review Committee, led by Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, will intensify its activities to ensure timely delivery of proposed amendments and reforms.
Senator Bamidele concluded by affirming that several significant bills across key economic sectors are pending before the Senate. He called for swift legislative attention to ensure their passage. Additionally, he urged both special and standing committees of the Senate to conduct public hearings, enabling the electorate to contribute meaningfully to the law-making process.
