Security Heightened as Lawmakers Gather for Plenary
The Lagos State House of Assembly ramped up security on Monday, January 27, 2025, ahead of its plenary session. Security officials, including policemen, thoroughly screened journalists and other individuals attempting to gain access to the assembly complex.
Our correspondent observed multiple security vehicles, including three police patrol cars stationed at the assembly’s main gate, with additional vehicles inside the premises. This move underscores the assembly’s effort to maintain order following recent leadership disputes.
Journalists Face Strict Screening
At the second gate of the complex, journalists were lined up while security officials verified their identity cards. Individuals who failed to present proper identification were denied entry. This strict protocol highlights the tense atmosphere as the House reconvenes.
Leadership Tussle Sparks Security Measures
The heightened security follows a weekend of drama stemming from the ousting of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. Despite being removed by a majority of lawmakers on January 13, 2025, over allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation, Obasa insists he remains the rightful Speaker.
Speaking at Ikeja GRA on Saturday, Obasa stated, “If you want to claim that I’m corrupt, please prove it, let us see it.” He argued that due process was not followed in his removal. Obasa’s former deputy, Mojisola Meranda, has since been appointed as Speaker.
