SDP Rejects Merger And Takeover | Nigeria Political Update

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has reaffirmed its independence, stating that it is not open to merging with any other political party. The party’s National Secretary, Olu Agunloye, made this declaration in an official statement, highlighting that any attempt at a hostile takeover by new members would be resisted.

New Members Must Follow Party Principles

Amid recent reports of defections from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to SDP, Agunloye stressed that while new members are welcome, they must strictly adhere to the party’s constitution and principles.

“APC and PDP have governed Nigeria since 1999, yet the nation is far from meeting citizens’ expectations. Injustice, corruption, vote-buying, and insecurity have fueled economic hardship, high youth unemployment, and widespread poverty,” Agunloye noted.

He emphasized that SDP stands as an alternative platform for progress, urging party leaders and state chairmen to mobilize citizens committed to good governance. He called for collective action rather than leaving the responsibility solely to the National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Gabam.
