The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has reaffirmed its independence, stating that it is not open to merging with any other political party. The party’s National Secretary, Olu Agunloye, made this declaration in an official statement, highlighting that any attempt at a hostile takeover by new members would be resisted.
New Members Must Follow Party Principles
Amid recent reports of defections from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to SDP, Agunloye stressed that while new members are welcome, they must strictly adhere to the party’s constitution and principles.
“APC and PDP have governed Nigeria since 1999, yet the nation is far from meeting citizens’ expectations. Injustice, corruption, vote-buying, and insecurity have fueled economic hardship, high youth unemployment, and widespread poverty,” Agunloye noted.
He emphasized that SDP stands as an alternative platform for progress, urging party leaders and state chairmen to mobilize citizens committed to good governance. He called for collective action rather than leaving the responsibility solely to the National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Gabam.
SDP’s Commitment to Political Ideology
Unlike some parties driven by personal interests, SDP upholds a strong ideological foundation, Agunloye affirmed. He assured members that the party remains guided by its vision for governance, justice, and equitable development.
To avoid the pitfalls that led to past failed alliances, SDP will carefully manage internal conflicts while reinforcing its party structures. The party is also focused on strengthening:
- Membership registration processes
- Constitutional and institutional frameworks
- Party organs and administrative directorates
SDP’s Political Future and Strong Identity
As the 2027 general elections approach, SDP continues to position itself as a credible alternative to the dominant political parties. With a growing membership base and a clear governance agenda, the party aims to restore trust in political leadership through transparency and grassroots engagement.
