The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has officially extended heartfelt condolences to Nigeria over the demise of the nation’s former leader, President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in a medical facility in the United Kingdom at the age of 82.

In formal condolence messages released on Monday, both the Saudi Monarch, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is also the Prime Minister of the Kingdom, expressed their profound sympathy to Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the family of the late President Buhari.

In his official statement, the Saudi King noted:

“The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, has sent a cable of condolences and sympathy to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.”

King Salman conveyed his deepest sympathy and sorrow, stating that his thoughts and prayers are with the government of Nigeria, its citizens, and the bereaved family during this period of mourning.

Similarly, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman shared his personal condolences through an official message addressed to President Tinubu:

“His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, has sent a cable of condolences and sympathy to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari.”

The Crown Prince emphasized his sincere compassion and extended his sympathies to the Nigerian government, its people, and Buhari’s immediate family.

Late President Muhammadu Buhari was notably instrumental in strengthening diplomatic and bilateral relations between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia during his presidency. His tenure was marked by significant engagements with the Kingdom, particularly in areas concerning religious diplomacy, cooperation in counterterrorism, alignment in global oil policies, and expansion of trade partnerships between the two nations.

Buhari’s efforts in fostering these international ties, especially with Saudi Arabia, are remembered as part of his broader foreign policy achievements. His legacy includes facilitating religious pilgrimages for Nigerians, security collaborations, and reinforcing Nigeria’s presence within OPEC frameworks alongside Saudi Arabia.

The remains of the former Nigerian President are scheduled to arrive today at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina State. He will be laid to rest in his hometown of Daura in accordance with Islamic burial rites, a tradition that underscores his lifelong adherence to his faith and cultural heritage.
