In a historic moment highlighting international relations between Africa and the Caribbean, Saint Lucia’s Governor-General has bestowed its most prestigious national honour on Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The award, formally known as the Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Lucia (KCOSL), was conferred in recognition of President Tinubu’s dedication to strengthening diplomatic ties and promoting shared prosperity.
This recognition followed President Tinubu’s address to a joint session of the Senate and House of Assembly in Saint Lucia. During his speech, President Tinubu pledged to reinforce and broaden the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Saint Lucia.
In a formal statement, Saint Lucia’s government also expressed its intention to officially establish diplomatic ties with Nigeria. Part of this diplomatic effort includes a visa waiver agreement, allowing holders of diplomatic and official passports from Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) member countries to enter Nigeria more easily.
“Saint Lucia and the Federal Republic of Nigeria will establish a visa waiver arrangement for holders of diplomatic and official passports from OECS member states,” the statement explained.
This momentous recognition of President Tinubu as a Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Lucia underscores the growing importance of reconnecting Africa and the Caribbean for shared growth and stronger diplomatic bonds.
