Elena Abramova Sentenced to Prison for Anti-Putin Protest Over Ukraine War
A Russian woman, Elena Abramova, has been sentenced to two years in prison for publicly opposing President Vladimir Putin and his war policies in Ukraine.
On Tuesday, a Russian court ruled that Abramova, a translator from St. Petersburg, must serve time behind bars for displaying protest signs that criticized the Kremlin’s stance on the war.
Why Was Elena Abramova Arrested?
According to reports, Abramova was charged for holding a placard in 2023 that read:
- “A world without war, a Russia without Putin!”
- “Freedom for Navalny! Freedom for all political prisoners.”
Her sentencing reflects Russia’s crackdown on political dissent, particularly on those challenging Putin’s war in Ukraine.
Ukraine Detains Suspected Russian Informant
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) reported on Tuesday that it had arrested a serviceman in Sumy suspected of aiding Russian forces.
According to the SBU, the individual allegedly provided coordinates to Moscow, helping Russia launch missile and bomb strikes on Ukrainian troops fighting in the Kursk region.
“While at the front, the ‘mole’ was preparing coordinates for the aggressor’s missile and bomb attacks on the locations of Ukrainian troops,” the SBU stated via Telegram.
Russia’s War on Ukraine and Political Crackdowns
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Putin’s government has intensified censorship and taken harsh actions against activists, journalists, and citizens opposing the war.
This latest case of Elena Abramova’s imprisonment mirrors other crackdowns on freedom of speech in Russia, raising international concerns about human rights violations.
