In the early hours of Sunday, Kyiv was rocked by a Russian missile assault, resulting in injuries to no fewer than three civilians, according to Vitali Klitschko, the Mayor of Kyiv and head of the city’s military administration.
The Ukrainian Air Force issued a nationwide air alert around 02:00 GMT, warning of possible missile threats across multiple regions, including those adjacent to Poland. As a result, Polish military aircraft were deployed to ensure aerial safety, given the proximity of the attack to the NATO-member’s airspace.
Klitschko confirmed via Telegram that fires had broken out in at least three city districts. Two injured individuals were hospitalized in Darnytskyi District, located on the eastern side of the Dnipro River, which bisects Kyiv. The full extent of the attack remains unclear as of the time of this report.
Previous Incidents and Border Sensitivities
While western Ukrainian regions bordering Poland reported no direct impact from this strike, the sensitivity remains high due to previous incidents. Notably, in 2022, a stray Ukrainian missile tragically killed two individuals in Przewodów, a Polish village near the border. Poland has since maintained heightened surveillance of its airspace. Escalation in Southern Ukraine
The missile barrage on Kyiv follows a string of violent escalations. Earlier, officials in Mykolaiv stated that three individuals sustained injuries during similar Russian attacks in the region. A more devastating incident occurred just a day prior in Kryvyi Rih, where at least 19 people, including nine children, were reportedly killed in another Russian offensive.
Conflicting Claims from Both Nations
As in prior reports, Russia has not issued any immediate response regarding the latest strikes. Both Russia and Ukraine continue to deny deliberate targeting of civilians despite mounting evidence to the contrary.
