Russian Attacks Continue as US Ceasefire Proposal Is Rejected

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has strongly condemned the recent missile and drone attacks by Russia, accusing Moscow of rejecting a United States-backed ceasefire proposal aimed at de-escalating the ongoing war in Ukraine.

According to Zelenskyy, the latest strikes — including a ballistic missile assault on Sumy on Palm Sunday — demonstrate that Russia prioritizes destruction over peace negotiations.

“Every drone and missile doesn’t just harm Ukrainians — it harms diplomacy,” Zelenskyy said in a video posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Devastation in Sumy on Palm Sunday

The attack on the northeastern city of Sumy during Palm Sunday celebrations claimed at least 34 lives, including two children, and left 117 others injured, according to Ukraine’s emergency services. The missiles struck while many citizens were preparing for Easter — one of the most sacred holidays in the Christian calendar.

Zelenskyy described this as further proof that the “aggressor” will not stop unless significant international pressure is applied.

US Proposal for Unconditional Ceasefire Ignored

The Ukrainian president reminded the world that it had been one month since Russia dismissed the US proposal for a “full and unconditional ceasefire.” Despite diplomatic talks, Russian forces continue their aggressive military actions, including nightly drone bombardments.

“Every night, nearly 100 Shahed drones are launched at Ukrainian cities,” Zelenskyy said.
“This shows Russia’s complete disregard for international peace efforts.”

Russia’s Use of Shahed Drones and Ballistic Missiles

Zelenskyy highlighted that the relentless drone warfare — primarily involving Iranian-made Shahed drones — continues alongside missile attacks and front-line assaults. The drones, often used to target civilian areas, are seen as a cost-effective and terrifying weapon in Russia’s arsenal.

According to BBC News, Russia has increasingly relied on drone attacks to wreak psychological and infrastructural havoc across Ukraine’s cities.

Call for Global Pressure and Justice

Zelenskyy praised the global outpouring of condolences and support from leaders, diplomats, and civilians, but emphasized that words must now be matched with action.

“War ends not only when the fighting stops, but when war crimes are remembered and perpetrators are brought to justice.”

He insisted that decisive global pressure — not just dialogue — is what will eventually bring an end to the conflict.
