Tinubu Calls on Niger Delta Leaders to Urge Governor Fubara to Obey Supreme Court Ruling

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Niger Delta leaders to guide Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara in complying with the Supreme Court’s ruling concerning the ongoing political turmoil in the state. Addressing the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized that ensuring stability in Rivers State rests on the shoulders of regional stakeholders.

During the closed-door meeting, the President reiterated the necessity of adhering to constitutional provisions, calling on political leaders to prioritize peace and the well-being of their communities. He stressed that respect for the judiciary is essential for fostering democracy and urged the leaders to help implement the court’s decision promptly.

“This nation is built on the rule of law. Without it, I would not be here as President,” Tinubu stated. “I trust our judiciary, and though human errors exist, once a judgment is given, it must be respected. I am placing this responsibility on you—privately and publicly intervene to ensure peace and stability.”

Commitment to Niger Delta Development

Tinubu reassured PANDEF members that his administration remains committed to community development in the Niger Delta. He acknowledged concerns raised regarding governance and development in the region, particularly Rivers State, and pledged to ensure progress through strategic projects and policies.

Highlighting the significance of the Niger Delta, he stated, “This region is the economic powerhouse of our nation. We must protect and nurture it to sustain our economic strength. The ongoing coastal road project and upcoming seaports will generate new economic opportunities.”

National Stability and Political Mediation

King Alfred Papapreye Diete-Spiff, Co-Chairman of PANDEF’s Board of Trustees, commended Tinubu for his dedication to the South-South region. Former Akwa Ibom State Governor Obong Victor Attah, who heads PANDEF’s reconciliation committee for Rivers State, warned that instability in the state could pose a threat to national security and urged the President to maintain focus on resolving the crisis.

Attah also applauded Tinubu’s reforms, particularly efforts toward power devolution, regional development, and infrastructure improvement, while advocating for greater fiscal federalism.

High-Profile Delegation and Meeting Highlights

The meeting, which started at 4:15 p.m., saw the presence of PANDEF leaders, former governors, traditional rulers, and political stakeholders. Attendees included PANDEF National Chairman Ambassador Godknows Igali, Senator Seriake Dickson, and former Cross River Governor Liyel Imoke. The President’s media aides and Minister of Information, Mohamed Idris, were also in attendance.

As Tinubu continues his administration’s engagement with Niger Delta leaders, the expectation remains that proactive steps will be taken to ensure peace, stability, and economic growth in Rivers State and beyond.
