The Rivers State House of Assembly has officially extended the deadline for the Chairman and Commissioners of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to appear before the legislative body. The new deadline is set for March 10, 2025.
This development was confirmed by Mr. Martins Wachukwu, the Special Assistant on Media Affairs to the Speaker, in a press statement released in Port Harcourt on Friday.
Reason for the Extension
According to Wachukwu, the extension aims to provide RSIEC officials with additional time to clarify their activities, particularly regarding their preparedness for the upcoming local government elections scheduled for October 5, 2024.
Previously, the House had summoned the RSIEC chairman and commissioners, but they failed to honor the invitation. As a result, lawmakers directed the clerk to issue a fresh summons to ensure their appearance.
Key Issues for Discussion
The Assembly seeks to obtain explanations from RSIEC officials regarding:
- Their actions concerning the upcoming local government elections in Rivers State.
- Unbudgeted expenditures incurred by the commission.
- Strategies to secure funding for the proposed elections.
Wachukwu emphasized that if RSIEC representatives fail to comply with the new deadline, the Assembly will enforce constitutional measures to ensure their appearance.
Political Tensions in Rivers State
Additionally, the Speaker’s aide highlighted the Assembly’s concerns over Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s refusal to:
- Present the 2025 Appropriation Bill as mandated by the Supreme Court.
- Submit a list of commissioner nominees for legislative approval.
These unresolved issues have heightened political tensions in Rivers State as the House of Assembly continues its oversight responsibilities.
