Rivers: Activist Adeyanju Demands ICPC Probe Into Ibas Over N283bn Revenue in Six Months

Human rights activist and lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has officially petitioned the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), calling for a full-scale investigation into the financial dealings of the former Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Ibok-Ete Ibas.

According to Adeyanju’s petition, Ibas allegedly managed and disbursed a staggering N283 billion within just six months during his tenure as the state’s sole administrator. The activist emphasized that such an enormous amount of public funds requires immediate scrutiny to ensure transparency, accountability, and compliance with Nigeria’s anti-corruption laws.

Adeyanju insisted that the ICPC must act swiftly, stating that Nigerians have the right to know how such massive resources were utilized within such a short timeframe. He expressed concerns that the funds may not have been fully accounted for and demanded that the commission exercise its statutory powers to probe all financial records connected to Ibas’ administration.

This call for investigation has once again reignited public discourse on governance, transparency, and accountability in Rivers State. Adeyanju further argued that unchecked financial mismanagement not only undermines public trust but also robs citizens of resources meant for development, infrastructure, and welfare.

The petition underscores the growing demand by civil society groups for anti-graft agencies to be more proactive in exposing corruption and prosecuting those found guilty. Adeyanju stressed that without such measures, Nigeria’s fight against corruption will remain cosmetic and ineffective.

The Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, established to curb financial crimes, has been urged to treat this matter as urgent and prioritize the interest of Rivers people who deserve clarity on the allocation and spending of their state’s funds.
