The House of Representatives has called for swift action to tackle infrastructure challenges in Nigeria’s South East region.

During the official inauguration of the South East Development Commission (SEDC) Committee at the National Assembly, Speaker Tajuddeen Abbas—represented by Deputy Speaker Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu—emphasized the urgent need for infrastructural renewal.

Abbas highlighted the commission’s pivotal role in economic growth, social advancement, and regional revitalization. He tasked the newly formed committee, chaired by Hon. Chris Nkwonta, with ensuring transparent and efficient fund utilization to drive meaningful development.

“The commission must bridge infrastructure gaps, stimulate industrial growth, promote peace, and enhance the quality of life for residents,” Abbas stated.

Hon. Nkwonta acknowledged the historical significance of the SEDC, aligning its mission with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Reintegration, Reconstruction, and Reconciliation (RRR) initiative.

The South East Development Commission Bill, passed in 2023 and 2024, represents a beacon of hope, signifying a major step toward restoring and rebuilding the South East after years of neglect and economic setbacks.
