Reminisce Declares: In Hip-Hop, Skill Trumps Wealth and Streams

Veteran Nigerian rapper Reminisce has reaffirmed that the core of hip-hop culture remains rooted in authentic lyrical talent, not in an artist’s net worth or digital streaming numbers.

He stated that regardless of a rapper’s financial standing or influence in the industry, true recognition within the hip-hop community can only be attained through undeniable lyrical skills and rap credibility.

Reminisce, best known for his hit single Local Rappers, made this bold statement while addressing the ongoing supremacy debate between popular Nigerian rap acts Odumodublvck and Blaqbonez.

Speaking as a featured guest alongside fellow rapper Vector on a recent edition of the On The Record podcast, Reminisce emphasized that the reason Kendrick Lamar is globally acknowledged as the victor in his recent lyrical face-off with Canadian artist Drake is simply because of superior skills—not popularity or wealth.

He explained, “Hip-hop stands out as the only genre that doesn’t value fame or financial success over lyrical substance. You could be one of the richest artists on the planet, but within the world of hip-hop, respect cannot be bought. That’s the unique thing I appreciate most about the culture. You must earn your status.”

He continued by saying, “Whether you hit five trillion streams or name your album the best ever, it doesn’t move the culture. What matters is the lyrical depth and technical mastery. This is exactly why Kendrick Lamar is considered the winner in his recent lyrical showdown with Drake. Although Drake holds a much bigger commercial profile, hip-hop focuses on lyrical excellence. That’s where Kendrick stood taller.”
