The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has successfully deployed a 510kWp mini-grid system to supply uninterrupted electricity to the communities of Elegbejoda, Mefoworade, Olorunshogo, and Omifunfun in Ife South Local Government Area, Osun State.

Sustainable Energy Initiative for Rural Electrification

This transformative project was executed under the Interconnected Mini-Grid Acceleration Scheme (IMAS) and is part of a €9.3 million in-kind grant funded by the European Union and supported by the German Cooperation. The initiative aligns with Nigeria’s goal of enhancing access to sustainable electricity in underserved areas.

Enhancing Socio-Economic Growth Through Renewable Energy

According to an official statement released on Wednesday, REA emphasized that the project is designed to strengthen Nigeria’s interconnected mini-grid sector while expanding access to clean energy for nearly 125,000 residents. The newly launched 510kWp mini-grid is not only providing power to households but also supporting local businesses, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities, significantly boosting economic and social development in these communities.

Government Endorsement and Stakeholder Contributions

During the commissioning event, REA Managing Director/CEO Abba Aliyu underscored the project’s importance in providing stable and sustainable electricity to the benefiting communities. Represented by Ngozi Chimdi-Ejiogu, Director of the Rural Electrification Fund, Aliyu extended gratitude to key collaborators, including the European Union, German Cooperation, and GIZ, for their unwavering support in making the IMAS initiative successful.

Additionally, Aliyu acknowledged the dedication of the Rural Electrification Fund Directorate, Project Lead Emecho Ted, and Havenhill Synergy Limited, the project developer, for their contributions to the seamless execution of the mini-grid system.

“This project goes beyond infrastructure—it is about empowerment. Reliable electricity will enable these communities to expand their economic activities, enhance educational services, and improve healthcare delivery, ultimately raising the overall standard of living,” Aliyu stated.

Osun State Government’s Commitment to Renewable Energy

Osun State Governor Sen. Ademola Adeleke lauded the mini-grid project as a milestone in advancing the state’s economic and social landscape. Represented by the Commissioner for Energy, Hon. Festus Ademola, Adeleke emphasized that the availability of sustainable electricity would foster growth, particularly for small-scale enterprises and essential public services.

“This project represents a major step forward for Osun State. The provision of sustainable energy in Elegbejoda, Mefoworade, Olorunshogo, and Omifunfun will unlock countless opportunities for development,” he stated.

Adeleke further reiterated the Osun State Government’s commitment to supporting similar projects aimed at ensuring affordable and reliable electricity for every community in the state.
