Putin Signals Openness to Ukraine Peace Talks Amid Ongoing Tensions

1 minute, 22 seconds Read

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed a willingness to engage in peace negotiations with Ukraine, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. However, Peskov emphasized that the complexity of the conflict makes swift progress challenging, despite active discussions with the United States.

Peskov stated that Putin remains open to political and diplomatic methods for resolving the conflict and has shown readiness for direct talks with Ukraine. He noted, however, that there has been no response from Kyiv regarding this offer.

In response, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha affirmed Ukraine’s readiness for peace talks in any format, provided Russia agrees to an unconditional and durable ceasefire. Sybiha emphasized that Russia must demonstrate its commitment to peace by ceasing hostilities unconditionally.

The Kremlin has proposed a three-day ceasefire from May 8 to May 10 to coincide with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations. However, Ukraine has criticized this offer as insufficient, advocating instead for a longer ceasefire period to facilitate meaningful negotiations.

While the United States continues to engage in discussions with both parties, it has expressed frustration over the lack of progress and warned that it may withdraw from mediation efforts if tangible results are not achieved.
