Red baseball caps parodying U.S. President Donald Trump’s famous “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) slogan are gaining attention in Denmark and Greenland as a humorous yet pointed form of protest. These caps, emblazoned with the words “Make America Go Away,” have emerged as a symbol of local defiance against Trump’s controversial statements about potentially seizing Greenland.
European governments have expressed strong support for Denmark’s stance, emphasizing the strategic importance of Arctic territories. Officials argue that threats against Greenland could compromise Western security and destabilize the region. Despite diplomatic concerns, the protesters are taking a more humorous approach to convey their opposition.
“I want to show solidarity with Greenland and make it clear that I do not support the president of the United States,” said 76-year-old Copenhagen resident Lars Hermansen, wearing one of the red hats at Saturday’s protest.
The creative idea for these hats originated from Jesper Rabe Tonnesen, a vintage clothing store owner in Copenhagen. While initial batches did not attract much attention last year, renewed U.S. rhetoric over Greenland has caused demand to surge.
Following the renewed political tension, sales of the caps skyrocketed, selling out in just one weekend. Tonnesen has since ordered several thousand more to keep up with demand.
Earlier versions of the hats featured a clever Danish wordplay: “Nu det NUUK!”, referencing Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, while playing on the Danish expression “Nu det nok,” meaning “Now it’s enough.”
Kristian Boye, 49, who wore one of the hats, explained that the gathering balanced humor with a serious message.
“I’m here to stand with the Greenlanders, who are facing the threat of foreign invasion,” Boye said. “It’s a difficult situation, and I believe it’s unacceptable for any country to be pressured like this.”
The humorous protest serves as a creative form of political expression while drawing global attention to the importance of defending Greenland’s sovereignty. As tensions simmer, the “Make America Go Away” caps continue to unite citizens across Denmark and Greenland in their message of resistance and solidarity.
