In a strategic move to revamp Nigeria’s steel industry, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Nasir Naeem Abdulsalam as the Managing Director of Ajaokuta Steel Company, located in Kogi State. The appointment takes effect from April 3, 2025, and is aimed at fast-tracking industrial growth in the country.

This announcement was officially made via a press statement by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. The appointment complies with provisions of the Certain Political and Judicial Office Holders (Salaries and Allowances, etc) Act of 2008, as amended.

Experience and Background

Before his elevation to MD, Nasir Abdulsalam served as Technical Adviser to the Minister of Steel Development, bringing a wealth of knowledge to the table. He also functioned as Special Assistant (Academics) to the Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), equipping him with both technical and policy experience.

Tinubu’s Vision for Industrial Transformation

President Tinubu urged the newly appointed MD to deploy his industry expertise to revive Ajaokuta Steel, which has long been seen as a dormant giant in Nigeria’s industrial landscape. According to Tinubu, this appointment is in line with his Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to position Nigeria as Africa’s top industrial hub and unlock economic opportunities across the federation.

This move is expected to spark economic revitalization and create jobs, especially in core industrial sectors. The revitalization of the Ajaokuta Steel Plant is also considered a critical pillar in achieving Nigeria’s self-sufficiency in steel production and reducing dependence on imports.
