Pope Leo Decries Horrific Killings in Benue State, Nigeria

Pope Leo has voiced deep concern and offered prayers following the horrifying violence that occurred in Benue State, Nigeria, where a large number of civilians were murdered.

According to reports, over 200 individuals were mercilessly slaughtered in Yelewata, a rural settlement located in Guma Local Government Area. The killings are among the latest in a string of violent incidents attributed to suspected herdsmen within the region.

While delivering his Angelus address on Sunday, the Pope acknowledged the tragedy and pointed out that many of those killed were internally displaced persons (IDPs) residing within a Catholic mission in the area, further intensifying the horror of the situation.

“From St. Peter’s Square, I offer prayers for Nigeria’s safety, justice, and lasting peace,” Pope Leo declared.

“I especially remember the rural Christian populations in Benue State, who continue to endure repeated episodes of brutal violence,” he said.
