Traditionally, deceased Popes are displayed on a catafalque—a raised platform inside St Peter’s Basilica—for public mourning. However, Pope Francis has opted to eliminate this tradition. Instead, mourners will have the opportunity to pay their last respects while his body remains inside the coffin with the lid temporarily removed, maintaining a balance between accessibility and modesty.

First Pope in Over a Century to Be Buried Outside the Vatican
