Security operatives from the Nigeria Police Force in Benue State successfully neutralized three armed criminals during a coordinated operation in the volatile Sankera region. The operation led to the recovery of illegal firearms and disrupted a planned assault on security forces.
The incident unfolded in the evening of May 3, 2025, around 7:00 PM, after credible intelligence was received that criminal elements from Shitile and Ukum were secretly convening in Sankera to orchestrate attacks on law enforcement agents operating in the area.
According to security sources cited by Zagazola Makama, the operatives traced the suspects to Tse-Gondo, a location close to a dense forest. A gunfight erupted as the Surveillance and Tactical Teams advanced toward the criminals’ hideout.
During the exchange, three bandits sustained critical gunshot wounds. They were transported to a nearby medical facility, where health officials later pronounced them dead. The police recovered two locally crafted pistols and two live cartridges at the scene.
Several others fled with injuries, including a notorious wanted criminal known as Baba Gule. Ongoing investigations have revealed that the ambush was reportedly initiated under the command of Konyo Amakaa, a known gang leader from Shitile. The motive behind the planned attack was retaliation for the death of Sughnen Ayua, a gang member who was killed in a separate confrontation with police on April 29, 2025.
Security forces are continuing their efforts to locate the fleeing suspects and dismantle the broader criminal syndicate that has been responsible for escalating insecurity in Sankera and surrounding communities.
