The Ondo State Police Command has arrested 32 suspects following a deadly communal clash in Akoko South-East that left two people dead, several injured, and properties destroyed.
The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 32 individuals connected to a violent communal clash that occurred on January 12, 2025, in the Iwaro area of Akoko South-East Local Government. This incident tragically resulted in the loss of two lives, several injuries, and significant property damage.
Arrests and Investigation Update
CSP Funmilayo Odunlami, the spokesperson for the command, provided updates on the situation during a press briefing in Akure:
“Yes, 32 suspects have been arrested in connection with the communal clash that occurred in Akoko on Sunday. All suspects are currently in custody, and investigations are ongoing to determine the causes of the conflict,” she stated.
The arrests demonstrate the police’s commitment to uncovering the roots of the violence and bringing those responsible to justice.
Background of the Communal Clash
The conflict originated between youths from three neighboring communities: Oka Odo, Ebo, and Owake. The misunderstanding reportedly began when a group of Oka Odo youths embarked on a hunting expedition and were allegedly attacked by youths from Ebo.
- Mistaken Identity:
The Ebo youths reportedly mistook the hunters for individuals from Owake, with whom they have a long-standing land dispute. - Retaliatory Attack:
In response, youths from Oka Odo mobilized and launched an attack on Ebo, resulting in casualties, injuries, and incidents of arson.
Casualties and Damages
The violent clash led to the following:
- Deaths: Two individuals lost their lives during the altercation.
- Injuries: Numerous individuals sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.
- Destruction: Several houses were destroyed during the incident, leaving families displaced and properties in ruins.
Police Call for Peace
Commissioner of Police Wilfred Afolabi reacted to the incident, urging the affected communities to embrace peace and avoid further violence.
“We appeal to all residents in the affected communities to maintain peace and cooperate with law enforcement as we work towards resolving the crisis,” the commissioner stated.
