Petrol Tanker Crashes Into Akpabio’s Convoy, Police Dispatch Rider Loses Life

A heartbreaking road accident involving a petrol tanker and the convoy of Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has resulted in the death of a police dispatch rider identified as Ibrahim Hussaini.

The tragic incident occurred on Sunday and was officially disclosed on Tuesday when the Senate President addressed fellow lawmakers during plenary. While speaking on the floor of the Senate, Akpabio expressed deep sorrow over the loss and extended his condolences to the bereaved family of the fallen officer.

Police dispatch riders are specially trained personnel assigned to escort top government officials. They typically operate official motorcycles and play a critical role in securing convoys, managing traffic, and ensuring smooth movement during official engagements.

According to Akpabio, the unfortunate accident happened shortly after his convoy picked him up from the airport in Ibadan, the capital city of Oyo State. Although he did not disclose the exact spot where the crash occurred, he confirmed that it happened while they were en route for an official assignment.

The Senate President explained that the delegation had traveled to Oyo State for the installation ceremony of a fellow senator. During the journey, a fuel tanker reportedly ran into the convoy, fatally hitting the police dispatch rider.

In his emotional address, Akpabio narrated the severity of the incident, stating that the tanker driver knocked down the officer, leading to fatal head injuries. He revealed that the late Ibrahim Hussaini was laid to rest earlier that same morning in Kogi State, barely minutes before he entered the Senate chamber to brief his colleagues.

The Senate President further disclosed that the deceased officer is survived by two wives and four children, a revelation that left many lawmakers visibly moved. He used the opportunity to call for prayers and support for the family left behind.

The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety, especially involving heavy-duty vehicles such as fuel tankers, and the risks faced daily by security operatives assigned to protect public office holders.
