Amid growing political speculations, Yunusa Tanko, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, has reaffirmed that Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate, remains a member of the Labour Party (LP) and is not defecting to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Tanko made this clarification while speaking on Channels TV’s Morning Brief, addressing the rumor sparked by Adewole Adebayo, a former SDP presidential flagbearer, who claimed that Peter Obi and former PDP candidate Atiku Abubakar were in discussions to join the SDP.

“As far as I am concerned, His Excellency, Peter Obi is still a member of the Labour Party,” Tanko stated. “There’s a meeting expected within the week where party leaders will make official statements in light of the Supreme Court ruling regarding the LP leadership dispute.”

He emphasized that until there is any official change, Obi’s loyalty remains with the Labour Party.

This statement comes after Nigeria’s Supreme Court ruled against Julius Abure, impacting the leadership structure of the Labour Party. The party is set to hold internal deliberations to clarify their future direction and affirm Obi’s status, Tanko confirmed.

According to a report by Premium Times, the Labour Party’s internal affairs have attracted significant national interest as the political landscape in Nigeria continues to evolve (source).

Meanwhile, political commentators are urging clarity and consistency from party officials to reduce misinformation and political distractions.
