During a solemn farewell at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, former Nigerian presidential candidate Peter Obi paid heartfelt tribute to the late Pope Francis, describing the spiritual leader’s life as a beacon of ethical leadership and compassionate service to humanity.
Obi, who attended the memorial alongside international dignitaries and Nigeria’s Cardinal Francis Arinze, expressed profound sorrow over the Pope’s passing, emphasizing how his life exemplified humility, service, and moral courage. Obi recalled Pope Francis as a true servant of the poor and marginalized, and a global symbol of what it means to lead with integrity.
A Leader Who Served Humanity
Writing on X (formerly Twitter) under the headline “Legacy of Light: Lessons from Pope Francis’ Life”, Obi reflected on the Pope’s commitment to the underprivileged. He stated that Pope Francis consistently spoke for the voiceless and inspired a generation of leaders to place humanity before personal gain.
Obi also shared his personal connection with the late Pontiff through his involvement in Scholars Occultantes, a global circle of intellectuals founded by Pope Francis during his time as Archbishop. According to Obi, the organization focuses on truth, ethical governance, and transformative leadership—a vision the Pope championed throughout his ministry.
“Pope Francis wasn’t just a religious figure; he was a transformative voice for justice, peace, and human dignity,” Obi remarked. “His legacy must inspire current and future leaders, especially across Africa, to govern with conscience and compassion.”
Personal Encounters That Left a Mark
Obi recounted meeting Pope Francis three times, each encounter leaving a lasting spiritual and moral impact. Describing him as a “quiet but powerful presence,” Obi said the Pope’s humility and clarity of purpose redefined what leadership should look like in today’s world.
In a heartfelt appeal, Obi called on global political and religious leaders to embrace the late Pontiff’s values of love, justice, and inclusive governance. He urged them not to let the moment be one of sorrow alone, but a renewed commitment to serve humanity with integrity and empathy.
“May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may we honor his memory by living out the values he cherished,” Obi concluded.
