Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of Nigeria’s Labour Party, has paid a heartfelt tribute to Pope Francis during a solemn ceremony held at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Attending the late Pope’s funeral, Obi emphasized that Pope Francis’ legacy is one of profound moral clarity and selfless leadership.
In a message titled “Legacy of Light: Lessons from Pope Francis,” shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Obi described Pope Francis as a guiding light in a world struggling with inequality and social neglect. According to Obi, the Pope’s entire life was anchored in truth, compassion, and service—particularly to the poor and the marginalized.
“He lived for others, gave voice to the voiceless, and consistently reminded leaders that true leadership is not about self-glory but about lifting others,” Obi noted.
During his remarks, Obi joined thousands of mourners and dignitaries, including Francis Cardinal Arinze, in honoring the spiritual icon. The ceremony marked a moment of global reflection on the values of humility, service, and humanity—virtues that defined the Pope’s life and teachings.
Obi recalled his deep connection to the Pope, particularly through his involvement in Scholars Occultantes, a distinguished intellectual group founded by Pope Francis during his time as Archbishop. The think tank promotes ethical governance, truth, and positive social transformation.
“Meeting Pope Francis personally on three occasions gave me firsthand insight into his humility and deep spiritual vision. He radiated a calm strength and inspired those around him to lead with conscience and care,” Obi said.
As the world bids farewell, Obi called upon African leaders—both political and religious—to emulate the Pope’s values by embracing justice, empathy, and inclusive leadership.
