Veteran Nigerian actor Patrick Doyle has shared his perspective on the ongoing controversy involving iconic Fuji artist, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, and the domestic airline ValueJet. According to Doyle, the confrontation that unfolded at the airport was a deliberate provocation by the airline’s staff, and unfortunately, the singer fell into the trap.

The dispute began when KWAM 1 attempted to board a ValueJet Flight VK201 traveling from Abuja to Lagos on a Tuesday. While preparing to enter the aircraft, the renowned musician carried a gold-colored flask, which immediately drew the attention of the ground crew. Suspicious about the contents of the flask—believed to potentially hold alcoholic substances, which are banned on Nigerian commercial flights—the staff insisted on verifying it.

However, KWAM 1 firmly declined their request, resulting in a heated exchange between him and the ground personnel. The argument grew tense enough that the pilot decided to move the plane, escalating the drama into a full-blown scene at the airport terminal.

In response to the disturbance, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) initiated an official investigation into the incident, focusing on what was termed “unruly conduct” displayed by the music legend during the boarding process.

Taking to Facebook to comment on the matter, Patrick Doyle offered a personal and deeply reflective take. He expressed disappointment that KWAM 1 allowed himself to be provoked, suggesting that the confrontation was intentionally engineered.

In his own words, Doyle shared:

“In many cases, public figures and celebrities enjoy certain privileges in various public spaces. Just a few days ago, I traveled to Accra, and from passport control to the local supermarket, I was shown special courtesy. Immigration officers and cashiers treated me as a VIP.”

However, Doyle noted that fame can occasionally attract unwelcome attention. He recounted his own experiences, highlighting how some service workers may harbor personal grievances against celebrities due to their onscreen persona or previous public interviews.

“Sometimes, the person giving me trouble is a complete stranger who, for some reason, already dislikes me. Perhaps it’s something I said during an interview or the way I portrayed a character in a film,” he wrote.

Doyle recalled a particularly challenging situation at the Asaba Airport, where a female staff member at the airline check-in counter refused to let him carry his hand luggage aboard, claiming it exceeded the weight limit by just half a kilogram. Even when he attempted to resolve the matter with humor, her reaction was stern and disrespectful.

“I realized she recognized me because her colleague had earlier asked for a selfie while I was queuing. When she barked at me to ‘respect myself,’ I immediately understood that this was a trap.”

Rather than escalate the situation, Doyle maintained his composure. He explained how reacting poorly could have led to unnecessary drama, as such staff often look forward to provoking celebrities into emotional outbursts, which can then be used to embarrass them publicly.

“She wanted me to activate the ‘big man’ attitude, shout back, and violate airport rules, giving her the satisfaction of saying she humbled the ‘arrogant’ Patrick Doyle. But I stayed calm.”

Reflecting on KWAM 1’s encounter, Doyle believed that the Fuji maestro fell into a similar trap set by the airline staff. Though he empathized with KWAM 1’s reaction, Doyle stressed the importance of self-control and discernment in such situations.

“Unfortunately, KWAM 1 was provoked, and he responded in a way they wanted. I don’t entirely fault him because, truthfully, I’ve lost my temper during similar confrontations. But lately, I always ask God to keep such provocations away from me. And if I must face them, I pray for grace to remain calm and not step into those toxic setups.”

Doyle’s reflective post offers a strong caution to fellow celebrities, urging them to stay vigilant and emotionally balanced in public, particularly when dealing with power-tripping personnel who may exploit their fame to incite chaos.
