Oyo State Records 272 Fire Outbreaks in Just Nine Months

Oyo State has recorded a total of 272 fire outbreaks within the last nine months, according to recent reports from the state’s fire authority.

The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Hon. Maroof Akinwande, revealed the alarming statistics during an interview with DAILY POST over the weekend. He expressed concern about the rising number of fire incidents across different communities within the state and urged residents to be more safety-conscious, especially during the dry season.

Akinwande emphasized that most of the reported fires were caused by careless handling of electrical appliances, gas leaks, and open flames, which could have been easily prevented through proper awareness and routine safety checks.

He also noted that the Oyo State Government has been proactive in ensuring the availability of firefighting equipment and trained personnel to combat emergencies swiftly. The fire service continues to engage in public sensitization campaigns, focusing on safety practices to reduce property losses and save lives.

The chairman appealed to households, business owners, and institutions to install functional fire extinguishers and avoid storing flammable materials in unsafe environments. He added that collaboration between the public and the fire service remains essential to minimizing further incidents.

In addition, Akinwande reiterated the need for continuous investment in modern firefighting technology, training programs, and quick-response strategies to handle emergency situations effectively.

Residents are therefore advised to take precautionary steps, such as switching off electrical appliances before leaving home, properly securing gas cylinders, and maintaining clear escape routes.

Fire incidents have been a recurring issue in Oyo State and other parts of Nigeria, with similar reports from Lagos, Ogun, and Osun States in recent times. The Oyo State Fire Service, through its efforts, continues to raise awareness on fire prevention and emergency response measures to ensure the safety of lives and properties.
