The Federal Government of Nigeria has revealed that its security forces have successfully neutralized more than 13,000 terrorists and apprehended over 17,000 suspects since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office in May 2023. This information was made public by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a detailed interview on Channels Television’s Politics program on Friday.
According to the minister, the administration has intensified its efforts to combat insurgency, terrorism, and organized crime across the country. Security agencies, including the Nigerian Army, Air Force, Navy, and paramilitary organizations, have been actively involved in operations targeting extremist groups, particularly in the northern and northeastern regions. These regions have historically been hotspots for violent activities, including attacks by Boko Haram and ISWAP factions.
Minister Idris highlighted that the current administration’s security strategy combines military operations, intelligence-led missions, and community-based approaches to identify and dismantle terror networks. He also emphasized that the government has placed a strong focus on arresting suspects involved in terrorism-related activities to ensure they face justice in accordance with Nigerian law.
Experts note that the scale of these operations represents a significant step in addressing security challenges that have persisted in the country for years. Analysts believe that sustaining such initiatives is crucial for national stability, economic growth, and the protection of citizens’ lives and property.
The minister further mentioned that beyond neutralizing terrorists, the government is also investing in rehabilitation programs for former insurgents, encouraging reintegration into society to reduce the risk of recidivism. This holistic approach aims not only at immediate security concerns but also long-term peace-building and development in affected areas.
These figures come amid ongoing debates about Nigeria’s security policies and the effectiveness of military operations. While some stakeholders commend the government for the scale of counter-terrorism efforts, others stress the need for continuous reforms, intelligence improvements, and enhanced coordination among security agencies.
For citizens and analysts seeking up-to-date security information, the government continues to provide updates through official channels, ensuring transparency and fostering trust in ongoing counter-terrorism measures.
