The Abia State Government held a solemn night of tributes on Tuesday in remembrance of the Late Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Sunny Onwuma, who recently passed away.
During the memorial ceremony, Governor Alex Otti praised Comrade Onwuma’s efforts and his unique manner of addressing labour-related challenges from the onset of their acquaintance. He also fondly recalled the late commissioner’s sense of humor and light-hearted jokes.
Expressing deep sorrow over the loss, Governor Otti emphasized how fulfilling it was to have worked with the late commissioner and urged individuals to reflect on the legacy they would leave behind.
“Working with Onwuma was a fulfilling experience. We stayed by his side until the end,” he said.
The governor described it as a difficult reality to accept that Comrade Onwuma would no longer attend Executive Council (EXCO) meetings or serve as the dependable mediator he had always been.
He highlighted the former commissioner’s ability to deliver effective resolutions on labour matters whenever he was tasked to intervene, making him a valuable asset to the administration.
Governor Otti extended heartfelt condolences to Onwuma’s family, encouraging them to remain resilient. He reassured them of the government’s commitment to offering support during this challenging time.
In a related tribute, the Organised Labour body in Abia State, represented by the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Ihechi Eneogwe, described the deceased as an exceptional labour leader and an unwavering public servant.
Sunny Onwuma, who had previously served as TUC Chairman in Abia State, died at the age of 62. His final rites and burial are scheduled for Thursday, 15th May, in his hometown, Isiala-Ihie, located in Ugwunagbo Local Government Area of Abia State.
