Laolu Akande, former spokesman for Yemi Osinbajo, confirms the ex-vice president remains loyal to the APC and active in politics, despite rumors of retirement.
Laolu Akande, the former spokesman for ex-Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has reaffirmed that his principal remains actively involved in politics and is still a dedicated member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
During a press briefing in Lagos, Akande addressed speculations about Osinbajo’s possible retirement from politics. He clarified that the former vice president has neither stepped away from the APC nor abandoned his political career.
“There’s no basis to assume he has left the APC or politics,” Akande stated. “As far as I know, he is still a loyal member of the party. If invited to an APC caucus meeting, he will undoubtedly attend.”
Why the Rumors?
Osinbajo’s noticeable absence from APC gatherings has sparked rumors of his retreat from active politics, especially following his loss to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the party’s 2022 presidential primaries.
Some observers have attributed his reduced visibility in political activities to the aftermath of the primaries. Others believe his focus on his new international role as the Global Advisor for the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) is taking precedence.
Akande’s Response to Speculations
Akande, who served as Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity during Osinbajo’s tenure, dismissed the notion that political or personal grievances are behind his principal’s political activities.
“He (Osinbajo) never told me he has left politics. These rumors are purely assumptions driven by his current international engagements,” Akande said.
The former spokesman reassured Nigerians that Osinbajo remains committed to serving the APC and contributing to the nation’s development whenever called upon.
