Ondo State Bandit Attack: 20 Killed In Akure North Communities

In a devastating incident, at least 20 people have lost their lives following a brutal attack by armed bandits in four communities within Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Communities Under Siege

The affected areas—Aba Alajido, Aba Sunday, Aba Pastor, and Ademekun—came under siege at midnight, forcing residents to flee for their lives.

Eyewitness reports suggest that the actual death toll might be significantly higher. A local resident, who chose to remain anonymous, indicated that over 40 individuals could have been killed, with several others still unaccounted for.

“The attacks began earlier in the week, but the most intense assault took place on Friday night. The assailants struck while residents were asleep, shooting indiscriminately. Many managed to escape into the nearby forests, while others were not as fortunate,” he recounted.

Security forces arrived on Sunday to recover bodies, but fears persist that more victims remain undiscovered in the surrounding wilderness.

Police and Community Leaders Respond

Confirming the attack, Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, Funmi Odunlami, stated that an investigation had commenced, and law enforcement had been deployed to restore order.

“We received a report on Saturday about the attack on Aba Pastor community. Our officers immediately responded to ensure peace and track down the criminals,” she stated.

Meanwhile, the Regent of Ademekun Community, Princess Adelowo Adekemisola, disclosed that her community suffered a heavy toll, with 14 fatalities.

“For over six years, we have endured recurring attacks from armed assailants. This time, they infiltrated our community, opened fire indiscriminately, and killed 14 people in one night,” she lamented.

Urgent Call for Government Intervention

Adekemisola urged the Ondo State Government and security agencies to take swift action to protect the affected communities and prevent further bloodshed.
