Okonjo-Iweala: WTO To Convey Special Meeting For Selection Of Next DG

The World Trade Organization (WTO) has announced plans to hold a special General Council meeting to advance the selection process for the next Director-General.

A statement from Ambassador Petter Ølberg of Norway, Chair of the General Council, indicated that the meeting would take place on November 28-29, 2024. This announcement follows Ølberg’s previous communication on November 9, which confirmed that no candidates had come forward by the November 8 nomination deadline, apart from the current Director-General, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

Ambassador Ølberg informed WTO members that, based on discussions with various delegations in recent days, and consistent with past practices when the incumbent was the sole candidate, a special formal meeting would be convened on November 28 and 29.

The second day of the meeting is expected to offer members the chance to decide on the appointment of the next Director-General.
